Eddie Firmani

Still giving pep talks to his local football team in Lake Placid, Florida

http://www.highlandstoday.com/hi/sports/green-dragons-playing-strong-down-stretch-20160112/

Is it me or is the whole Lake Placid team hispanics? *

* I hope hispanics is the correct term. This was not meant to be a racist post nor was there any attempt by the poster to cause offence to anyone in Lake Placid, the North American continent, readers of Shrimperzone or indeed the whole world. I will apologise now in advance to ensure that my apology is read by anyone who can correct me and provide with the educational input that would ensure that a similar error does not occur again.

I'll never forgive Eddie Firmani..... after months of relentless nagging I was close to securing a pair of the latest sleek continental 'shoe' style 'under ankle' boots when Eddie hacked up and played with sublime skill in what from the stands looked like hobnail boots. Dad never needed much excuse to avoid expenditure. He was the first proper football hero for me. He wasn't quite as formidable away from home though !

Have to agree with all that has been written about Eddie Firmani, I started watching in 1965 and was new to football, a very impressionable 12 year old. I used to spend most of the matches watching to see how easy he made the game look. I tried very badly to play like him but never seemed to get that amount of time on the ball. Great memories.

Fifty years ago next Friday I saw him score a hat-trick in a 5-2 win against Gillingham. :Worthy:

For a nine year old lad on his first visit to see the Shrimpers it was the stuff of dreams, I'm still dreaming now.:whistling:

I blame him equally with my father, who took me along, for causing me so much despair in equal measures with frustration and hope for the rest of my life.:winking:
