Post-Match Thread and Ratings Ebbsfleet 0-4 Southend United

The aim surely is not to just reach the play-offs, although that would already be quite an achievement. So, I have a cunning plan! We need to finish in seventh place which would likely give us an away tie to Rochdale or Oldham, which we win. I would then make the short trip to Lourdes to pray that Halifax can deal with York and we can defeat Forest Green. In comparison to that lead in, the Final should be easy-peasy! In truth, if there is any justice in the World (which I'm having serious doubts about at the moment), then York should be promoted and if we are not at Wembley I'll certainly be rooting for them. Don't want to see them in the National League next season, if we are still there.

I won't complain if we win the play-offs but York have 26 more points than us at the moment. It was similar a couple of seasons ago with Notts County and Wrexham miles ahead of everyone else as the top two, and to a lesser extent last season with Barnet in second. Making it three up, three down between the NL and League Two seems a no-brainer to me.

If we don't win back our EFL status please explain how just geting in the play- offs is somehow a positive?
Sure. At one stage we were 15th, and would have have snapped peoples hands off, if they said you will have a chance of the play-offs at the end of the season. Some on here were even talking of relegation. Do we deserve to go up?, No. York do. But, if in the play-offs, and we somehow pull it off, we'll take it and party. Why aren't some of you happy if we make the play-offs? It doesn't mean everything is Rosy. I'm still not happy or confident in our forward line. Kev drives me nuts every home game with his constant barraging of the officials. Substitutions drove me nuts with him as well, but lately he's got it right most of the time. When we win 4-0 away from home in a game we must win, I'm going to enjoy it, revel in it, and praise the players and staff. I like it so much, I've watched the high lights 4 times. I tell it like it is, when the team are playing well, I say so, when playing bad, I say so, When I'm annoyed or angry, I express it, as I have many times the past few seasons. But I really love a good win and performance, and say so, despite some putting a dampener on it. I know some of you don't like the positive stuff, as you want to keep going on about where we are, and what a mess we are in. I get that, and we are in a mess, but far better than going out of business, as we so nearly did. I just think we need to let this play out. There's so many positives going on behind the scenes. COSU have pumped a lot more money into sorting things out than expected. But they just get on with it and don't brag about it. I think once all the off field stuff gets sorted out, there will be better investment on the field. It may take a few years, but it's their own money, so I'm more than happy to wait, especially after they've saved the club and are still pumping money in. So I see getting in the play-offs, if it happens, as a very good thing, just being in it would be great, and a big boost for the players, staff and fans.

One game at a time!

Rather than focussing on scenarios the simple fact is that we must win on Saturday irrespective of what happens elsewhere. Then at the full time whistle we see what others have done. That then gives us certainty over what’s needed for the last game. Personally I’d like to go into that last game needing a win rather than a draw. Oh and I fly back on the 2nd 😀

As it's a 5.30ko for us on Saturday, we'll know what others have done before kick off which changes things slightly - you would hope in our favour.

if we get in to the Play Offs that’s positive and an improvement on last season. If we don’t win them it’s disappointing.
Our results and performances were good enough to be in the play offs last season. The disappointing factor was that due to factors outside of the control of KM and the players we were not able to test ourselves with teams who had also deserved to be in contention for an EFL return.
This season our results and performances have not been good enough when you compare the negative factors of last season to those of this season. They have been less and some influencable by KM.
So not progressing would be both a sign of disappointment from my perspective and frustration. Some of the excuses that are being floated on here do not have long term validity. Some of the reasons were avoidable in my opinion.

It proves the progress being made.

I get it, we all think we should be back in Lg1, mixing it with former prem teams & local rivals.

But the damage that was done to our club will take time to recover from. We’re probably years from getting back to that level.

So for now, a team who currently improves season-on-season is the best we can really ask for. Achieving a playoff finish will undeniably prove that we’re on the right track… even if it’s at a pace that some aren’t happy with.

Because you have to be in it to win it - even if it doesn't go your way in the end. Simple as that surely?

Secondly, it's a good look in terms of attracting players etc, to reach the playoff postions does give you bit of status and shows that things are going well or at least in the right direction. We want to keep in the same company as the other bigger teams in the division (Rochdale, Oldham, FGR etc)

Are you moving the goalposts now, getting the playoffs only counts if we go on to win them? 😜

That’s given me a thought. I wonder whether moving the goalposts might solve our barren striker problems.

That's right :it's always been my opinion. :Winking: (Though I'll admit that getting in the playoffs would be quite an acheivement for this sqaud of players & K.M.)

They are not excuses, they are facts, and they will remain facts. The ghost of Ron Martin has hung over this season. Next season KM will finally have the backing he needs, subject to the budget available, and I will judge him properly then.

Excuses and facts are two completely different things. Facts are known happenings, excuses are justifications that individuals have been using to support the facts.
What facts are appropriate to support the incorrect tactics that have been adopted this season? The ghost of Ron Martin? 🤔
What facts are appropriate to support the purchases of Bonne and Hopper and Mahers inability to identify and develope permanent strike force? The ghost of Ron Martin? 🤔
What facts are appropriate to support the ommission of KAF for two thirds of the season? The ghost of Ron Martin? 🤔
What facts are appropriate that would explain the inclusion of Husin and Bridge in the starting line ups at times when their form didn't justify selection.? The ghost of Ron Martin? 🤔
Finally, are you saying that Maher has not had the backing that he has needed this season? Isn't that an insult to the consortium and a large number of fans who have not jumped on his back and stayed patient. Also, who will be the judge of the budget being appropriate or not. Surely, that will be the consortium. The ones that actually saved our club from The ghost of Ron Martin? 🤔

Very good of you old chap 😉

Check the stats on our results when Bridge is included vs without. For a **** player he doesn’t half have a lot of luck.

Before asking me to check the stats I would suggest you do.
Here's the stats that represent his luck.
- 26 appearances when he's played 75 minutes or more.
- 60% of our fixtures.
- 10 of those fixtures resulted in 3 points
- 8 of those fixtures resulted in 0 points
- only 2 games he was an unused sub
- only 2 games he wasn't in the starting XI

So do you still believe that his performances this season in the 40 games that he has appeared in deserve the level of game time that he's been given?
He's average game time in those 40 games is 75 minutes and we've had a return of 1 goal and 4 assists.

I'd call that lucky!

But the idea that it was the wrong tactics, that KAF was ready to start earlier, that Noor and Bridge shouldn’t have been picked etc is ultimately all opinion and not fact.
