Post-Match Thread and Ratings Ebbsfleet 0-4 Southend United

The main difference being that he only had one marker on him yesterday. Not sure why Ebbsfleet didn’t follow suit with so many other teams this season & double/triple him up. But that’s their loss & our gain.
Maybe Ebbsfleet relied on the Zone for their pre-match intelligence and found out that he’s an ineffective, NLS standard player who needs to be moved on as swiftly as possible, who only beats himself, can’t use his left foot or cross the ball and concluded he was barely worth marking. Once again, the fiendishly clever double agents on the Zone have bamboozled the opposition.

Important not to peak too soon when steaming into the playoffs 🙃 Coker, Bridge, Husin coming into some good form, three strikers hitting the net and a clean sheet with an easy afternoon for monsieur Hayes.
We started off like the last half hour at Roots Hall, seemingly bereft of ideas and slow to attack, minimum movement to move their defenders around. I was in the stand Discussing to my friends about Coker dictating a snails pace midfield.
Then it all perked up. Goodliffe with a wicked curler from way out had the keeper beaten, but not quite the post. Then, someone (got to watch it back to see who) ACTUALLY threaded a ball past the defender to Kendal (is it called breaking the lines these days) and a beautiful left footed banging shot saw their keeper Cousins unable to stop the net bulging.

We huffed and puffed a bit, but a Southend side that are a goal up are always a handful for anyone in this div and our possesional style held the key. Suddenly, Bridge's crosses were looking menacing, Coker's joined up play was a bit further up the pitch and Southend had their tails up. It was all heading only one way. Keenan was breaking up the pitch and in support often, Gus was bombing in at the far post. Lots to worry about for Ebbsfleet and soon enough in the 2nd half they began to cave in.

A nice easy win away, a soaking, a big shrimper crowd that were a bit quiet 1st half (after being metaphorically kicked in the nuts watching the last few games) had perked up, now we were singing in the rain, the party started with news that Gateshead were getting stuffed.

My man of the match.. Charley Kendal. We've missed him. What a ****ing finish to open the scoring.

We sang ouside in the rain to the car. Our prayers answered. Perhaps the gospel band in Gravesend high st had it right all along... hallelujah ! Indeed, our Shrimpers were again risen after looking dead and buried on Friday....

Thought is was a bang average performance from one side clearly better equipped than the other.

Let's not forget that ebbsfleet have let in 95 odd goals this season.

Bridge still tries too hard when the first time ball is on. Gus played a good few way off being dangerous.

The real change came when a little pace came on and we had runners in behind.

They are possibly the worst side we have played at this level, and whilst it's nice to still be in with a shout going into the weekend, it should have been much easier to do so, but for some criminal game management at sutton and poor games against Solihull and braintree, this team would be almost guaranteed a spot.

A decent performance and result. Yes, expected, but I have allowed myself to feel happy with it and to smile about it, unlike some!

I thought we attacked with more pace, ran at the opposition more, and got in behind more. Feels like Kendall, KAF, Parillon, and sometimes Bridge are vital to this at the moment. I'd like to see more of those four on the pitch together.

With that being said, there were still a few frustrating elements to the performance. Overplaying, not playing an earlier pass when it's on, and poor quality of final pass/cross being the main things. I seem to flip from week to week between whether that's a confidence deficiency, or a quality deficiency. Perhaps a bit of both!

Either way, the players should go into the Wealdstone game full of confidence.

The aim surely is not to just reach the play-offs, although that would already be quite an achievement. So, I have a cunning plan! We need to finish in seventh place which would likely give us an away tie to Rochdale or Oldham, which we win. I would then make the short trip to Lourdes to pray that Halifax can deal with York and we can defeat Forest Green. In comparison to that lead in, the Final should be easy-peasy! In truth, if there is any justice in the World (which I'm having serious doubts about at the moment), then York should be promoted and if we are not at Wembley I'll certainly be rooting for them. Don't want to see them in the National League next season, if we are still there.

Having gone through the posts and seeing all the love shared towards Husin, Coker & Bridge I'd thought I'd put a bit of reality to the thread.

Ebbsfleet as many people have correctly pointed out are a poor team. I would agree we can only play depending on what's put infront of us. But there were times when our generally mediocre performers looked good. But in reality it was only KAF who delivered a performance consistent with his previous displays. Opposition, which in all honesty were far better than Ebbsfleet.
This proves one thing. His ommission on Friday was the most recent and probably Mahers biggest gaff! What did Husin and Coker do on Friday that justified their starting places yesterday? Both were substituted based on inadequate performances, don't forget.
What outstanding performances did they put in against a tougher opposition that would justify their inclusion against Wealdstone?
Parillion has done more in the few minutes that he had yesterday than Husin has done in the last 4.
If you were to watch yesterdays game back just count how many misplaced and lazy passes were made by them. Luckily, Ebbsfleet were that poor that they didn't have the quality to punish us. Despite what many think, Wealdstone have quality and will.
Another factor from yesterday's game that few if any have referenced was the introduction of Poleon in the 53rd minute. Ebbsfleet went 2 up top and removed a midfielder at the same time. This resulted in more space in midfield for our "over performers" and 3 goals from the 63rd minute onwards.
So is all this praise really deserved for the full 83 & 90 minutes of their games or is it based on the space that they were given by the opposition because Ebbsfleet decided to try and make a game for it?

Things are never as good as you think they are or ever as bad as you think they are - as someone once said

A welcome and much needed dose of reality. Ebbsfleet were awful and made us look good. Wealdstone and Gateshead will be a much sterner test as everyone must know.

It becomes relevant if Gateshead draw on Saturday (and remember they play before us).

I have a feeling that even if we win our next two games and reach the play-offs, some of the usual suspects on here, will still turn it into a negative.
Why does everything on here have to be seen as positive?
Why can't people accept that others on here, including myself, should be able to post realistic opinions.?
I also am keeping everything crossed that we can get into the top 7 and see where it takes us.
Stating that people "turn it into a negative " is just pitching Blues fans against Blues fans. Let others have an opinion that differs from yours and I'll allow you to freely express yours.

Saw a note somewhere regarding Halifax and ground share.
It is allowed, providing the football match is controlled by the football club.

Everyone can see that Ebbsfleet are the worse side we've played this season, possible the worst we've ever faced at this level.

Everyone can see that Husin and Bridge, to name two, have not performed this season as we'd want them to.

Everyone can see that Wealdstone and Gateshead will be a much tougher prospect.

Everyone can see that we're a squad with a lot of limitations that better sides will expose.

However, I have a very simple view of the beautiful game and it's helped me survive 50 years of supporting our great club.

Wins are positive, defeats are negative 👍
