We need to win the playoffs before he'd even think about coming down here permanently. The guy has too much class for league 2. Don't forget, he's here on loan to get match fit and put himself in the window for a new contract next season.
Whether or not he's here next season will depend on him and Ron Martin.
I'm sure it hasn't escaped anyone's attention that since he's been back our attendances have risen by over a thousand even though we we out of the promotion race until the last 2 games. That's the Freddy factor. The question is, will Ron (or rather, can Ron) afford him?
There will be a lot of league 1 clubs interested in him (and maybe Stevenage too if they get into the Championship). He'll demand a sizeable salary and an equally sizeable signing on fee and there are plenty of league 1 clubs next season who have the finances to meet his demands. The 4 playoff clubs will have a look, Swindon will definitely be looking for a double promotion under Di Canio and Preston to name but a few. Even our friends in North Essex may come in and offer him a similar route back home - think about it...a marquis signing and the chance to rub our noses in it.
Personally I think if we go up then Ron will try and meet his demands but it won't be the best offer on the table. Bringing him here on loan was a bit of a masterstroke by him - the new stadium is going nowhere, our season was in free-fall and his arrival gave us all a much needed lift. However if one of the bigger league 1 clubs make him a priority signing I can't see us being able to match that offer.
A footballer's career is short and he is pretty much on his final chance. If his heart and desire is still there for the game then I think he'll come back because we love him like nobody else does. If he's only interested in that one final pay-cheque then sadly I think he'll go elsewhere.
