Dublin

Tangled up in Blue

Certified Senior Citizen⭐🦐
WE're off to Dubin for a week in mid-August.

Haven't been over there since 1978.

Anyone got any useful travel tips? Things to do/see, etc.

(And yes,Grumpy Blue-I've ordered a couple of travel guides.Thanks).:raspberry:

If you get a T10 travelcard it will let you get to the airport and back and a further 8 journeys when you return home.

I've never been to Dublin so can't help there

I've been three times. I'd suggest getting recommendations from locals for pubs and food, because it's a pricey place and there's a lot of dross and a few gems. Inevitably, I can't really remember the good places from when I went with work in November. I'm back there for a stag do this summer.

The open top bus is a good way to see some of the sights. Guinness factory is ok if that's your kind of thing. Vaguely remember some decent and more local-y pubs down past St Stephen's green. The pub music is great.

You`ll fit in ok as like Barna, Dublin has turned into a ****ing theme park

The Book of Kells at TCD and the National Museum are both worth a look. The latter has a fascinating mummified corpse that was found in a peat bog.

Stayed one night/day in Dublin whilst travelling back from the South West of Ireland. We went on a walking tour of the city. The girl that led the tour was fantastic and very knowledgeable. If the other guides are as good as her you can't go too far wrong.

What's more, my wife and I (and our very asleep then one year old) were the only people on the tour so we went at our own pace. On top of that I offered the guide a tip at the end and she flatly refused it saying that she is very proud of her city and it is a pleasure for her to talk about it and show it off to visitors.

No wonder their economy is bust!

We had a similar experience on the open top bus, the driver/commentator was brilliant.

The Guinness brewery is a must, you get a lovely pint of it at the end (this is coming from someone who doesn't drink Guinness). Apart from that there's not a great deal else. I wasn't bowled over when I went to Dublin to be honest.

Cheers.Had an Irish mate (a Dubliner) around the other night for Sant Joan (summer solstice)and he also recommended the NM.

Walking tour is a good tip.Really enjoyed one we did in Berlin a few years back.

O'Connell Street is a must to have a wander down if you've not done it before,

Ta,Kay.I'm sure it's changed since 78.I remember that James Joyce used to describe the street, store by store, to his Paris visitors to check if anything had changed.Or was that Grafton Street?

I'm also surprised no one mentioned Kilmainham Jail. Seems up your street. If your a culture vulture you'll love it. Mrs Pubey enjoyed it but I was quite hungover.
