Driving Test

I think my test cost something like £15 or £20 ... that was back in 1988

Crickos cost 4d i believe

did they even have tests back then?

When i was doing driving tests back in 2002/3 they were £37 IIRC. Cost me a fortune learning to drive :(

Prices have certainly rocketed since I passed in 1998. The test was about £32 and lessons were generally 10-12 quid an hour - these days they're up to about 18-20 quid (or so I hear!)

If you are fortunate enough to have a car to learn in, i.e your own or a family members, then I would say this on top of lessons is a god send.
I failed twice, then I got my own car and went out with my dad and practiced extra in it in place of a few lessons which saved me a fair wack and then took my test and passed third time.

Amen to that. When I was learning my dad took me out in the car for driving practice regularly so by the time I took my test I had clocked up over 100 hours of driving.
I passed first time.

There's no subsititute for experience! :p

Yeah exactly, I just wish I had the chance to learn in my own car frm day one, prob would've saved myself a couple hundred quid. The only drawback to learning with a family member as an addition to lessons is that you can find yourself picking up bad habits that are the norm once you have passed but is frowned upon in your test i.e. crossing your arms over when turning the wheel.

The worst two habits I picked up were letting the wheel slide through my fingers rather than feeding it back and resting my arm on the side of the door.
Thankfully I managed to eliminate them relatively quickly (until I passed...)

I was due my test on the 28th, but they cancelled it and resheduled it for the 11 of November, a joke. Meaning I have to pay an extra few hundred pounds in driving lessons, the reason why they had to cancel it, they repainted the bay parking lines to make the bays bigger, which took a couple of hours to do, its a ****ing joke.

There idiots down there. I had a test booked for a monday in december 2003.
Had a letter to prove it went down and there told me they had it booked down there for the next day. i had to pay out for the lesson i was on and then hoped that the other person who was booked with my instructor would cancel. I failed that test as well.

My brother went to take his test last year and they cancelled for some stupid reason, yet again he had to re-book another test and pay out for the the instructors car. After much arguging with the test people he managed to claim back a full days paid work.

That's the last thing I want to do!!

I did go out in my mates car once and nearly smashed it into a transit van. I didnt think the accelerator was that sensitive....and i've got a habit of stalling the thing too. He did tell me to get out the car and sit in the back though, nicely :D

The industrial park next to Warners Bridge is a nice area to get some driving experience with little to no other traffic.

If you're lucky! AA and BSM are at least £25 an hour nowadays, I pay £20 which is pretty much standard.

Bad idea this one, as you'll have minimal experience when you pass - IMO new drivers should amass at least 30 hours of driving experience before they take their driving test!

Well i took a 3 day intensive course back in 1990 passed first time, i now have a car, bike, class 1A psv license and cb forklift license, so it didnt do me any harm and i never had an accident, mind you the standard of driving does seem to have gone down in the last 5 years or so , maybe due to excess foreign drivers on our roads, or to many young herberts lol
