Post-Match Thread and Ratings Dover Athletic 0-1 Southend United

Make no mistake, today's win was a fantastic result.

If anyone thought it was going to be an easy win, they would have been wrong.

Dover, who were docked many points, are playing for pride, and at home, will fight and dig their heels in to avoid a defeat. Despite the impossible position they are in, they have heart, and credit to them. Teams like this make it hard to break down, and I am sure such was the case today.

Southend, by contrast, are a side still adapting to a new coaching team, training methods and playing style, mixed with a lot of personnel changes in the squad, which takes time to gel. Taking all this into account, picking up wins like this is nothing but valuable and hard fought for.

For the run we are on, the direction we are going, there has to be massive credit to Kev, Currie and Benno.

They have very quickly turned around a very poor side and turned them into a decent team. They have instilled a never say die attitude, and a winning mentality, into a developing squad so quickly.

The so called old guard have all stepped up. Kev and co are getting the best out of the young players too, including loan player Dennis who was a lost young footballer when they came in. The squad they inherited have been made organised, motivated and the shackles have been taken off, now playing with confidence, belief, for the shirt and for each other.

Kev, Benno, Currie.... we salute you!!

The scouting team too are doing an amazing job. They are bringing in hungry players to compete for 16 positions (yes, it's about fighting to get on the bench now also) and those players are all contributing to this developing team and squad. Credit for the decision to bring in John Still .... what a positive move already that has been where lower league talent has already enhanced us, and will keep improving.

However, it's not just on the pitch and training ground where there has been a turnaround.

It's evident that behind the scenes there have been improvements also.

We were all very unhappy with the ticket office situation, and that appears to have changed. Certainly for those purchasing tickets, the print at home scheme has been hugely succesful, both in saving the club money, the supporters time, and in effect taking pressure off the ticket office, where I now acknowledge, were extremely under staffed and overwhelmed. Huge credit goes to Tom Lawrence for this.

I know Tom has played a huge part in many others areas and for this we can only be thankful that at last the club has responsible, competent, honest, accountable and progressive leadership.

Lastly Stan ..... what to say???

It goes without saying that what Stan has brought to this club, you just cannot measure. The changes to date would not have occurred in my opinion, without his influence.

Initially without being employed by the club, Stan has built huge bridges with the fan base. Some knocked him, for which I have never understood, but let's get one thing straight. Stan never came here for money. With his contacts and know how, if it was about money, he could easily find more profitable and easier work elsewhere in the game.

Being a former player, and a very good one, did he come just to take credit? Absolutely not .... my observations of Stan, is that he isn't one with an interest in praise. This is not what he is driven by.

So what is he here for and what has he done??

I believe Stan is driven by success, AND heart, for which he has a huge one for SUFC. For that we are extremely fortunate.

I, for one, have nothing but admiration and great respect for this great man and for what he has done and continues to do.

Even when questioned by his claims, he has worked tirelessly with passion and desire to get this club back to where it should be. All because of the drive and qualities he has, and of those around him, we have started a journey where good times will be coming back. Of course there will be some difficult periods ahead, as there always is with every club, and the doubters will be ready to attack again, but with Stan's influence, we have a good solid platform to work on.

Aside building relationships and setting up a network of links with other clubs, it is clear to see Stan's influence with our media approach, which has really stepped up a number of levels. For example, the clubs Twitter feed, has a real vibrant and professional look about it now, and we are well informed. Amazing work!!!

So from the players, to Kev, Currie and Benno, to Stilly, Stan and Tom, you have our support for this long exciting journey ahead.

Come on you Shrimpers!!
Totally agree ....I am both touched and excited about Stan collymores involvement with our southend united . If you think back to 92 ..a Murphy signing from Palace who due to Wright and bright had little chance to shine arrived at roots ..banged in I think 18 in 33 games ..and let's be honest we were and rightly a stepping stone to Stan achieving top level status . But for him to come back and of course I am not saying him alone , but he has with others turned this club around . A cohesive professional squad ( how often we said that last 3 years ) a more slick approach to fans interaction
.I have been attending games involving sufc for 40 years ..and from the lowest I ever felt ..the 7 v 1 massacre that was Doncaster..to how I feel now it can't be gauged ...Stan from the bottom of my heart I salute you . It may not always work ..but you won't understand the hope you have given all us shrimpers

Not the best game indeed. I really feel that the 3 at the back confuses things. Their pacy forward guy played to that. Our squad though is really coming together. There's a strong team in there to really make a difference. On the up. Up the blues.

I think Southend is now reaping the rewards of a neatly structured and rigorous managerial appointments process in which Stan must take considerable credit. For the first time in decades, KM, DC and MB were selected on the basis of a four-person selection panel in which SC provided extensive background on each of the candidates.

The Chairman deserves some credit for acknowledging that his previous method of appointment ( a largely solo effort in consultation with RD or Harry Redknapp) had not worked well and participating as one member of the selection panel. And like most supporters, I am really excited by the players that have been brought in by the new managerial team. Judging by the early results, I think we can all look forward to an exciting conclusion to this season. I am not predicting a play-off position, but one thing that really strikes me as significant is that few of the top teams look absolutely unbeatable...

My heart rate was increased far more by the steep walk up to the ground than the game which was far from a thriller but always good to win.

The atmosphere and positive passion from the fans now at games is great so much better than the toxic one we endured just a few months ago.

Although it does not always come off I do like Arnold’s willingness to distribute the ball quickly.

We weren’t brilliant and we rode our luck a tad with them hitting the inside of the post but you’ll take a scrappy 1-0 away from home no matter the oppositions league position. I also thought that Dover performance was miles ahead of what we saw a couple of months ago and it was a heavy pitch so never going to be a riot.

I think on another day we get the early penalty awarded, go 1-0 up, and settle and dominate the game. I said before that the longer it went on 0-0 the more hope Dover would get.

The support was phenomenal. I think when these new lads come in and reference us being a big club it can sometimes feel like they’re just saying it to get the fans on their side but actually to take nearly 2000 in the 5th tier says an awful lot. And credit to the management team because 3 months ago we’d barely have taken 1000 down there.

Interesting that the new signings have now won us 4/6 points on the road in two games. Good to see they’re having a positive impact and I thought yesterday Powell looked lively off the Bench but perhaps just tried a little too hard.

Onto Tuesday night now where a win can take us to the dizzy heights of 13th!!

It's noteworthy @Sensei Phil drew reference to Dover's effort.
Maybe, @WhiteCliffs can enlighten, but they were the only club to defy the NL to keep going during lockdown - despite having no gate revenue.

League rules warn about spending beyond your means, and Dover called them on that - and were punished, as a result.

Now, there might be nuances I've missed, but fair play to a club who, as Sensei says is playing for pride only and still gave us something to worry about.

Am not sure about the NL and its set-up, and even less so about referees at this level.

Yesterday's decided that getting hold of Powell by the neck was acceptable along with ignoring that Cardwell penalty shout.
Have watched it a few times, and seen most given.

Think there’s been some very generous scoring on here. We were bloody awful, albeit in difficult conditions, but will take the 3 points all day long.
Dimi/Husin joint motm with a 5 in my opinion

Thought we were clueless at Aldershot and even worse for Dover. Hoping we are more forward thinking on Tuesday…..shot count for 190 minutes this week about 2…..take the four points though. People getting a little too exited at the moment, decent midfield and width is needed….new little bloke added spark to the negative rubbish.

Credit to Dover, they made it really difficult for us. They were better than Aldershot IMO and much improved from when we first played them.

Genuinely no idea on MOTM as I didn’t think there was any standouts whatsoever. Husin for his goal? Atkinson for his work rate? It wasn’t that everyone was bad, we just couldn’t get anything going really.

Sign of a good side when you come away with a 1-0 win and don’t play well. Really looking forward to the future

Atrocious game to watch. No real quality on show from either side. The bobbly pitch didn’t help of course. Thank god the away end kept me awake. Amazing from us fans again.

Too many long balls. Not enough football. Nobody wanted to take control of the game, get a foot on the ball and influence things. It was all rather sideways and backwards and no cutting edge. As said above the pitch played a part in that for sure.

Dover probably hard done by to be fair and a point would of been about right. Gyasi up top for them was causing us problems, then for some strange reason was hooked off. Unless he was injured.

Not sure any of ours can really come out of it with any decent ratings. But the main thing is they kept focussed and ground out the 3 points in the end. A good fighting spirit for the full 90+ mins which is exactly what’s been missing.

That's me screwed then. In the chaos of trying to get in, didn't see this person. That's points I've lost then.
I found that funny anyone wanting to pay cash , just go to the side gate and put £18 in the Bucket... Bingo you're let in .... also never saw anyone giving out voucher's, hundreds turning up its was just chuck the fella £18 and run in through the side gate they opened .

Saying that I believe that must of counted the money and worked out how many paid in cash, as there was around 2,000 Southend there.
