There is some truth in the double standard stuff and the council could do more for the club. I don't think they are anti Blues, just ambivalent. The annoyance I feel with SBC is the huge salary to contractors and head people who don't appear to do much to warrant it & the expences claims that they have bben making for years for doing things that are part of the job.
I understand the head of council lives out of Essex (own choice?) and claims either travelling or hotel costs when evening functions are required.
This may be a poor example but to me it shows a lack of desire & an essential link with/for the town which should go with the job.
And if they are detached from the town do they have a push to see it improve as a resident would?

How, John? I am old enough, and have/had enough insight in to local politics in Southend to be very clear that the Council have been less than enthusiastic(!) about the existence of a League Football Club in the area. Even taking into account the confrontational approach of Vic Jobson in the past SBC could, and should, have done a lot more to further SUFC's ambition to upgrade to a new stadium, and even now their attitude is luke-warm and driven by what they can get out of it - Rab has a valid point when he draws comparisons with their approach to other major development projects.

While Rab's perennial whitewashing of RM is tiresome, he still has valid points to make, while your complete hatred of RM seems to prevent you from seeing anyone else's point of view, and I would add, seems to have led you to rarely post on SZ any more, which I think is a shame.

Well thank you, I think. :unsure: I would just like to take this opportunity to dispel any misapprehensions. Firstly I am not RM's love child. Secondly, despite my abdominal rotundness, I am not having his babies. The fault for my protruding abdomen lies solely in the products of Pukka.

I acknowledge the many mistakes RM has made in both overextending himself and most definitely in PR. I do not wish to absolve him from any blame and for what it is worth I do not believe he counts himself as blameless. I just do not see him as the enemy. Just a guy with ambition that maybe he could not easily deliver. Thats not to say he wont. I also believe he does care about the fortunes of the club.

As for SBC, I stand by my earlier indictment of them and consider them to have done far less than they could of to aid the facilitation of FF. Indeed of late I can think of 'six million' reasons for my accusation of double standards.

There are those that do not agree and those that will only lay blame with RM. Personally I see Southend, with its vast catchment and great location, and cannot attribute it with the vibrancy it deserves. I believe the successive councils have dragged us into being a virtual backwater and the new stadium fiasco is but one of many decisions the council has got very wrong.

As opposed to the old Victoria shopping centre that looked like a concrete toilet. The council does not do eyesores does it?

Probably because they've already got a half demolished one on the seafront for every visitor to the town to see..... :'(

As a further example of how poor the council is on developing the town, go to the airport. It is booming and bringing jobs and money into the town :BUT it is private money making it happen and a lot of Rochford Council.
SBC did very little about it.
Today it has a few flights diverted from closed airports so making more progress in its profile.

Southend looks like a tired run down town on the verge of closure - sorry if this gets up some people's noses.
Princes avenue is a disgrace frankly - want ain't boarded up is smashed and on the opposite side of the road Southend council have the neck to hang a banner proclaiming "borough council of the year"
Ron Martin just like Vic Jobson before him certainly ain't no angel's but I've always believed that Southend Council would prefer it if Blues just weren't there anymore.
The earlier comment about the council leader not even living in Essex and claiming travel and accommodation expenses just about sums it up for me.
