Deja vu?!

At xmas we was told there would be players joining us and we got 2 I believe, again this end of season we was told there would be players joining us, and I understand the season has only just ended but I can't help being sceptical about us signing enough players to cope, we're always told we're gonna sign players, then later told they wanted 'unreasonable demands' well now we're a championship team i'd imagine those demands would be more unreasonable than before and personally I see us starting the season, with some new personell obviously, but only replacements, no extra players so once again having a threadbare squad which in the championship, would get found out. I hope i'm wrong and we sign 7 or 8 high quality players, but I doubt we'll sign more than 3 or 4 tops, and again crossing our fingers against injuries or suspensions.

Why do people think we'll need more players in the Championship than you do in League One?

Granted 16 was on the small side in League One but its equally small in the Championship - no more or less!

Its still 11-a-side football and still 46 games!! In fact its easier as we wont have the LDV!

We need more than 16 players - I'll accept that. We did last year too.

We may get injuries, just as we might have done last year. We were lucky we didnt - but I dont see the argument for saying you need more players for 46 Championship games than you do for 46 League One games. You can still only start with 11 and make 3 subs!! Nothings changed!!!

Yeah I agree with that, but our squad was too small last season , we were lucky. This season the players we face will be stronger, quicker, its not just bodies for fitness, but alternatives too, so we can switch styles etc. The demands will be tougher and we need more than the 10 players we currently have under contract!!!

We do for sure... as you say though the season has only just ended.

The thing that strikes me about Tilly's transfer dealings is that he doesnt just go for anyone - he goes for good players that are wanted by a whole host of clubs. I think thats why we often have to wait and negotiate...

I'm sure Tilly will sign 6 or 7 players minimum in the summer - and that can always be topped up if required in the first few months of the season.

We're probably all just really bored without the footy and desperate for news - which is what makes everyone so downbeat because we havent signed anyone yet.

Dont forget there's more than two whole months before the season starts! (Sob!)

Your right its desperation, we're seeing our players leave 1 by 1, with no-one new coming in. I'm also sure we will get enough players in but I just wanna see us linked to some players or something! But Tilly keeps it all hush hush and it makes me panicky!

Is it not still May?

Perhaps you'd like to assist Ron Martin by holding a shotgun to a player's head and force him to sign the piece of paper.

Some teams don't even have managers yet, and nothing will start moving for some time. If I were a player I would wait until mid-July before committing myself. Players in demand aren't going to sign quickly unless they are highly motivated to do so (close proximity, personal reasons etc). The way of getting the best deal is to wait, and wait.

It does amuse me that some people think you phone a player up and ask them to sign and they say, "Southend... yes. I think they're a good club with a good manager. Scribble something down on a piece of paper and I'll be there in an hour to sign it."

That'd do! I don't care if byfield signs on the back of a chewing gum wrapper as long as its legal!

For Christs sake. Its May! If we've still got 10 players at the start of August, then we can start to get worried.

Bit harsh Neil... you're not wrong but people being nervy is understandable (its more down to boredom than anything else though I reckon as I say)...

Thenewblue - true a few of our players have left, but in truth they were always going to go with the possible excpetion of Bentley (in my opinion) so its no surprise. I didnt think any of them were up to the Championship and none of them would have been starters. They were just taking up space in the squad and no-one could seriously tell me that if you wanted to change the game against Birmingham in the 70th minute you'd bring on Pettefer or Jupp!

So, the money spent on their wages is better saved for someone that we would bring on. And I have a feeling that we'll be cheering at least one signing before this week is through (no inside knowledge, just a feeling!).

You're not saying anything that hasn't been said by half a dozen other people today though.

We all know that we need to sign players. We all know that we were very lucky with injuries last year and might not be so lucky next season. But Ron Martin and Steve Tilson know this too and will bring in the players who they feel will improve us.

I'd rather us have 18 good players than 10 good players and 12 who aren't very good but who are making up the numbers.

Yeah but, it's easier (and quicker) to get rid of players than it is to recruit new ones. I've no doubt players are being spoken to and negotiations are under way, but these things take time.

I know it's difficult, but let's try and be patient. (And that includes me!)

This is one of the most ridiculous statements I can recall for a while. None of the players who has gone so far will be going to a higher or even comparable level and none of them would have done much in the Championship.

I am pleased with the departures to date. The release, direct or engineered, of these players is a sign of ambition and clearing the way for players who are more likely to make the grade than those that have left.

If you were going into a Championship season with those players in the squad, that'd be the time to panic.

Chill out guys, not one of the players released would have been good enough for Championship football and with them gone it frees up more of the budget to get players in who ARE good enough to play in the 2nd tier. Yes there will be certain players who will no doubt reject us again same as last year but we SHOULD be more attractive to more now anyway, certainly those plying their trade in L1 and L2 but who ARE good enough for Championship football. We should also be able to pick up a few freebies from established Championship clubs who have released members of their squad and we should also have a much better chance of picking up some quality loan signings from the Premiership should the need arise (whether that be a young raw talent or an ageing veteran with much experience to help guide us to safety next season).

Bottom line is Tilly and Brush will be well aware how many bodies we need and they'll be doing their utmost to get them in, they'll know we can't survive in the CCC without a significantly bigger squad than last season and they'll also be keen to tie some players up relatively quickly and not leave it as late as last summer if they can help it.

I give up! Some of you are just arseholes to be honest, I won't bother posting anymore, just get shotdown anyway. I'll just stay silent from now on.

Ye i was thinking about this as well. Just like last season when we only managed 2 new players. Could well be something similar this season

Dont be like that mate - discussions and disagreements are what these boards are all about!

Be a bloody boring place if we all always agreed with each other!

sycophancy (which is not an attraction to individuals of a questionable disposition) has never interested me as a hobby.

Feel free to post your views and opinions, but don't be surprised if people disagree with you. You are more than entitled to be concerned about the lack of transfer activity and express it on these boards. I'm sure many agree with your sentiments. I however do not.
