defeat from the jaws of victory

The new formation isn't helping Gilbert out as he's getting completely over-run constantly. If we want to play McCormack, Maher & Bailey in the same team then one of them has to be on the right rather than all three being in the middle in some sort of diamond.

**** me! Never thought I'd see that!

So, if Flavs does have that fault, and Collis is no better, any suggestions on who to bring in. or how to counter the problem?

I think that just playing a taller centre half might help Flavs with some of the crosses that come into the box

Changing the defence would not of been the answer today. We needed to get Black on earlier, and also Eric on up front. Sitting back and inviting the pressure would not have worked. We need to get the ball forward more in the last ten minutes and have a threat up front to keep Brighton on the back foot.

The problem is that Clarke and Barrett can't play together, they are both too small. In our promotion years we had Prior, Edwards and Sodje providing the height and ariel cover.

We will not be going anywhere until Tilly realises this. Its not upfront our problems are, its at the back, and has been for months.

IMHO the defence were fairly and squarely at fault today - not Flavs . They repeatedly let average forwards run at them from deep and get goalside . They had their let-offs in the first half but didn't learn their lesson . This seems to happen every week .Brighton had obviously watched the Leeds video and knew what to do . I felt we missed Francis in the team as his height helps at the back especially at set pieces .

You are absolutely right about Gower/Black and ChasMac/Eric , but if the defence was competent they should be able to cope with such situations - after all they happen all the time .

Why doesn't Flavs come and punch any more ? He used to do it alot . He was able to dominate his area in the air in those days . My guess is that he has been told not to do this and the plan is for him to stay on his line and rely on the defence to protect him .Which would be fine if they did their job .

3 more points there for the taking and wasted

Could be wrong, but my guess would be confidence. It's bound to have an effect eventually, and no keeper likes letting in that many goals

Played well for most of the game but went completely missing for their second. I liiterally don't know where he was but he wasn't where he should have been.

Shows the value of substitutions, he was fine against Cox their first left winger but couldn't seem to cope aginst his replacement, Robinson.

Meanwhile our left winger/midfielder was similarly getting nowhere but was not replaced by his seemingly able deputy until it was too late.

we have to hit the net at the other end and Steve Tilson is quite happy to use non league strikers to attempt to do this!
well we scored 2 goals away from home, so it doesnt appear to be an upfront problem

totally agree, it happened at milwall last week and we got away with it, it happened today and we didnt.
Its all well and good getting a quality player in on loan, but he is still only one player and cant defend against 2 people no matter how good he is!

Does it really matter whose scoring, as long as we are scoring?

well you said its clearly not an upfront problem well neither of them scored so how can you say that.
its put down to the fact that our midfielders can score goals but they cant defend as i just mentioned in the previous post we were constantly outrun down the wings bvecuase of the formation we played!

Mccormack is no winger, neither is Bailey, we play a tight diamondish formation...

We need to play Black and use mccormack and Bailey to their strengths.

Bailey played out wide-right for Barnet a lot of the time. He's not a conventional winger but someone needs to be there, like Bentley & Pettefer used to be.

its not as straight forward as that. The team scored 2 goals away. If the forwards are doing their job that allows the midfield players more space.

If the forwards had loads of chances and missed them all then yes that is a problem but a team scoring 2 away form home should get something from the game.

Exactly. The forwards weren't scoring at the end of last season either. One of those forwards was Freddy Eastwood and he's quite good. It's a different story at the moment because back then we were devoid of any confidence and weren't creating anything for anyone. Now we're creating chances and scoring goals and whilst the strikers aren't currently scoring them they are creating space by Harrold coming deep and MacDonald running accross the line of the defence.
