I was under the impression that bees used polarised light for navigation, so I would put my money on the latter theory - the number of different chemicals we are happily pumping into the environment, and the amount of them, is seriously scary.
I have a chum whose an emtomologist (insect specialist ) and amoung the community its actually not such a huge problem for our food production , as the majority dont actually come from flowering plant's . Also while it would be sad to loose bee's a replacement spieces would take over fairly quickly , and their are other pollen collecting speicies (we would lose honey mind ;) )
The clue to teh big scandel is the figures being banded around for economic lose . (basically evoltion and nature don't give a toss and mankind will have to just wait )
which on-line home-uni did your emtomologist friend study with? I am pretty sure there would be no convenient "replacement species" suddenly popping up (out of where?) to take over the job that has been the sole domain of bees for millions of years. The thing is, it is not just a simplistic matter of human food production - or the silly loss of profits. In the grand scheme of things we - humans - don't really matter. Insects - in fact the entire interlinked system of plant and animal life - would happily continue if we, humans, were to suddenly disappear off the face of the earth. We, however, would not fair so well in the absense of insects, because insects - and in particular bees - are the central factor in the entire ecological infrastructure. It is all about the domino effect: cast your mind back to school science lessons and the principles of the food chain (on which we precariously and arrogantly balance at the tip): nothing exists in isolation, everything depends on something else that depends on something else that depends on something else..... with everything if you trace it back depending at the very base level on bees as the foundation. The fact that the government can only talk in terms of finance is because this is the only limited language that they, in their narrow mindset, can understand. But it is not about money: it is about things much bigger and more important than money and it is about much, much more than agricultural crops.
Worked for the natural history museum, but they just a silly old knowing place ;)
Its called theories my dear , its impossible to prove unless it happens and pieces would take over and as i said it would cause problems . Yes i said the same as you however it appears within the insect world there can be more sped up evolutionary changes (most recently a dung beetle becoming predator instead of scavanger . and not taking thousands or even hundreads of years to change its roll ). http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7840404.stm
There are other pollen colecting speices as i was informed , and a branch of the community believe it would be taken over . We created the structure of the food chain or its representation how we see it . Dosnt mean to say its correct or even we understand the entire rules .
Also i didnt state we would get on with out insects i was talking about one spieces and no eco system is dependant apon on speices to survive. You keep up or you do and get replaced .
Just read the article you linked and yes: fascinating stuff and I do get your point – the evolution of nature is truly a wonderful thing (hmm, I feel an Al Green rewrite coming on ). However, this does not necessarily give us humans the right to blithely go about stuffing it all up in the naïve belief that it will all be ok ‘cos good ol’ Mamma Nature will sort it all out. Either her or Daddy God. And yes I know it is all just theories but theories is all we have – my dear – and it is a fact that these theories are built upon the evidence of experience, and this experience does show that Bees (along with everything else) are disappearing at an alarmingly rapid rate, with all evidence suggesting that it is us and our technological disregard for the natural foundation of things causing of the problem. Apparently we have less than a decade to sort it out – after that we, so the theory goes, we are in big trouble :O. It is all ok though, because those lovely helpful scientists at NASA have found a solution: they are out there right now searching for a new planet to colonise with Humans when this one (as it will) becomes too poluted and depleted to live on. So that's alright then .
Lol ooops i didnt get my point across properly in my first post doh , im not saying humans arnt responisible i was implying that in a way i hope we get it in the arse from all this . Life will find away simple as that humans can take a running jump , i meant life continues not humanity , were governed by the same laws as well ;) . And yes the arsewipes in various quarters of soiety proclaiming that its only right we go forth and colonize and not look after the planet were on (ah bless) and using the anology of seeds flowing into other more fertile lands . A quote from the matrix is approrptae i think as Agent Smith said mankind and viruses are so very alike
"I’d like to share a revelation that I’ve had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I’ve realized that you are not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment. But you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague."
(my spell checkers given up btw )
When Lactobacillus Casei and Bifidus Digestivum bacterium can write a song as beautiful as Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now, or can paint a lovely picture ala Rolf Harris then I might agree :p
Didn't Agent Smith lose? I certainly lost the will to watch it in Matrix 2.
