Decent Indian in London

Only one worth going to

Cafe Spice

Owned and run by Cyrus Todiwala

It is rated as probably the best Indian Restaurant in London if not the country. I have been there a few times with friends and can not recommend it enough.

Used to work round the corner from here when it first opened, perhaps 12+ years ago. Was pretty good but at the time it often seemed to be trying too hard to be different. It's still there though, so they are clearly doing something right. Also, many other places seem to be copying some of their style, so they were obviously ahead of the time.

Always find City Spice (opposite the Truman Brewery complex) to be one of the best bets on Brick Lane, more varied menu than the usual fare and competitive pricing. Echo MtS's comments about the great South Indian places in lewisham, there's another called Madras on Lewisham High Street that's worth checking out.

for exceptionally posh (if rather off the beaten track) Indian, one of the best-kept secrets is Babur, Brockley Rise SE23. Very much a fine dining feel and incredible food- priced reasonably considering the quality and a lot of seasonal offers/special menus.

BTW - Have you ever tried the Indian buffet in Greenwich next to Tai Won Mein (which I know you patronise)?

I often lunch at Tai Won Mein but would give the Indian buffet a whirl if it was any good.

Have to confess, I've not tried that particular Indian. I've been to the one on the other side of the road, near the entrance to the market, and was generally pretty disappointed - poor quality mutton, as I recall. I've not been back.

Tai Won Mein still rocks, though - I was there on Friday night.

:)

Have had their take out and it was excellent - will have to try a sit-down meal there.

In 2000, Cyrus was awarded an MBE in recognition of his extensive knowledge, skill, commitment and expertise to the restaurant and catering industry.

A takeaway has recently opened near my office. The thali is different every day and for £2 (!) you get two small pots of veggie curry, rice, daal, a chapati and a bhaji/bateta wada/samosa. Great taste and wonderful value.

I left that particular company in 1998, so clearly Her Maj was keeping an eye on his progress.

I do not have an MBE, despite my extensive knowledge of Indian take-aways.

Also, just try pretty much anywhere in Tooting.

Tooting is awesome, and is where half of the early Brick Lane scene has moved to by all accounts...

Is Saliques still off Brick Lane. that was always one of the better ones, or The Clifton.

Yep, it's still there on Hanbury Street.

I use to go to Saliques quite a lot, but whilst it is still good, I don't think it's quite as good as it once was.

I'll have to try some of the ones on or just off Commercial Road.

Its funny our offices are based in the Brewery and in 4 years i can count on 1 hand the amount of currys i have had in Brick Lane. Not becuase i dont like curry or that they arent any good but the old adage of it being right on your doorstep so you just dont bother

I had the weirdest mexican I've ever had in Mumbai. Still not sure what I ate.

Any before anyone asks, this was literally my 3rd week in India and I'd been currying for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

My recommendation is a bit off the beaten track, but 'Papaya' in Rayners Lane is fantastic. Devilled paneer and masala dosai to die for.

Still never went there, which is odd.

Can heartily reccommend the Lahore off the Commercial Road. Superb place, very reasonable prices and usually populated almost exclusively by Asians - always a good sign.

the take-away isn't bad but the restaurant itself is a completely different building and menu. just don't make the mistake of going to the place with a suspiciously similar name that's right on the corner of Brockley Rise and the South Circular.

Noted!

The place to head to at the corner of Brockley Rise and the South Circular is the newly-refurbished pub, The Honor Oak - or to Le Querce, which is nearer to Honor Oak...

...but then that's a different thread entirely!
