Day 7: Kevin Maher - Player-a-day

Couldn't agree more.

Any club lurkers on here (Dave Scriven?) might want to print that out and see that it finds its way to the man himself.

Even despite everything that N'Zamba says above, it strikes me that Kev has never really enjoyed the warmth from the terraces that other, far lesser players have received at times.

Like that pratt Carruthers for instance!!!

Kevin Maher's got a monkey on his head

Maher = legend. A true Southend great; the only other one we have at the club at the moment is the manager.

I'd love him a bit more if he didn't get booked so many times for dissent.

:thump:

But he has earned his place at the top table of Southend legends, alongside the Bests, the Moodys, the Bentleys and the Pountneys.

He's now at number 5 in the all-time appearances table, and will overtake Ronnie Pountney by the end of the season - although he's a good 3 seasons-worth of games shy of Alan Moody's total.

Matt

A true Southend legend.

Still can't believe the amount of stick he gets from some of the so-called fans. The rest will be doing him good at the moment. The fact that Kev is out of the team and we are still winning shows how much the team has developed under Tilson. Back in the day, if Maher was missing, we would normally lose, even to some of the dross we have played over the years.

Best passer of the ball at the club and at the heart of everything good about us. Just see his vision, and technique of the ball he played to Barrett to score Vs Donnie. Sublime.

Long Live King Kev

Maher is magic. One of the club's greats. In particular I admire his courage in sticking it out through the bad times when he was a boo-boy, when managers came and went and when the team was always **** and going nowhere other than down. Eventually it became obvious that he was in fact the best player in this dire team and he was deservdly made captain. After a couple more false starts, Kev led the team under Tilson to two cup finals, two promotions, the league cup qtr final and a victory against Manchester United. Objectively these achievements speak for themselves but Maher has also helped foster an excellent team spirit, he has remained loyal and most recently he has dealt with being dropped from the team (for the first time in four, five years?) in an exemplary manner. No doubt he will come back even stronger. As a player Kev is very, very good, he has a great passing range is strong on ball and his vision is excellent. Alongside partners such as Gutts, Bentley or Macca we have seen Kev boss many a midfield and ultimately allow us to come out on top. Most people would also agree that Kev was one of our only players who really made the step up from lower leagues to the championship. As the banner at Cardiff read, Kevin Maher is Best Man.

100 per cent correct.

Just for still being here after the abuse he took in early years is amazing, indeed a legend and fully deserving of his testimonial

Our next manager?

Interesting. Not sure - perhaps too early to say, but it's possible. I'd like to think that there was some role for him at the club when he eventually hangs up his boots.

One person whom (if he were interested) I'd like to see given the job, if Tilly were ever to leave, would be Spinner. I think he'd make an awesome gaffer.

I'm also a fan of Stimson; he's enjoyed a lot of success wherever he's managed, and would be delighted to see him at RH.

Matt

Maher was the man that attracted me to the club in the first place. My dad took me to my first game to show me how to play centre midfeild (he couldn't afford to take me to West Ham as he would have perferred)

I watched Maher and he almost became a hero in my eyes, everyone wanted to be Zidine Zadane in the playgroud but i was Kevin Maher.

And for that Maher,
I will be forever grateful

Long Live Sir Kev
