Data Analysis on Players.

So this is why Kev is getting rattled. We’re letting a computer say yes or no on targets.

When I read that, I did raise an eyebrow.

I’m no technophobe, but I do wonder whether these automated systems can actually be useful in this industry. I don’t know enough about it being used in football to either rubbish or praise it (although I was tempted to insert the Sean Dyche meme until @hlane17 beat me to it :Winking:)

We do, however, know that the tried and tested method of recruitment based on scouting/hunches/recommendations/reputation can be quite hit and miss. Overall, I think our recruitment under the current regime has been quite good (admittedly this season, probably not so much).

The question is, will these computer analytics find us the next Pepple? Or more concerning, will these analytics see us miss out on the next Pepple because the target hasn’t hit enough of the KPI’s 🧐

I guess give it time and see if it works or not. If we see success over the next 18-24 months or big money made from selling players on then I’m all for it.

I do have my doubts though
I'll tell you now.. it's not gonna work. He is a business man and not a scout like John still etc. Imagine having the knowledge of John still in your club and instead make decisions on FOOTBALLERS using some businessman sat in Seattle who probably didn't know what football was until last week. ****ing stupid

Yeah I get they want to try it out but midway through the season fgs .. I would much rather trust JS and he’s army and I’m sure the coaching staff would too they been in the game for years ..

All very well but cut Kev the same slack as he continues to work with one hand tied behind his back- and there’s not even a tropical fruit drink…

Can't help but think now is not the time to try and implement a new system

Was the time to implement it before we signed Moncur, Bonne and Waldron?

Going down the moneyball route because they saw it on a film

It’s strange how things change. When Stan was saying Brentford was the model people seemed on board with it, now people dismiss it because they saw a film a decade ago of a book written over two decades ago.

I thought people wanted the club to be run on a more business like basis? Because most well run businesses use analytics. Do you really think Jason Brown’s HK hedge fund doesn’t use analytics? That Justin’s tech start up didn’t? The new investor isn’t trying to implement this because he saw Moneyball - this has been his career in fintech.

Data is a part of it - should be 33% data, 66% approach! Scouts, watching game etc can’t disappear it’s what you see in the pitch, the runs, temperament, desire! Can’t put that in data - if we are going down a majority data route - how will we get players under 23 playing on the under 23 league where it isn’t a ‘mens’ game, physically and mentally wise. Or lower league, they won’t track the data below NLS/N I highly doubt. Concerning and hope it I am proved wrong.
