Daryl - The thinking behind it?

The last two seasons have seen us relegated and fail at promotion while conceding a large amount of goals. Daryl has done tremendously well for us over the years but let's not forget that we let him go once because we didn't consider him good enough, only to re-sign him because he was in non-league and we were without a keeper.

One on one he is a great shot stopper but you can't ignore the fact that he is short for an ideal keeper. Too often he hasn't been able to command the box at crosses and we have seen free kicks go in the top corners.

T&B have decided to have fresh look at the team and realise the defence needs strengthening. Unless you get the basics right and start with a commanding goalkeeper then the defence is always going to be under pressure. This has a knock-on effect on the rest of the team.

I fully understand that Daryl would not be happy with only a 1 year contract, he has to look after himself and his family, so 3 years at Palace is great for him. I feel sure that this will suit everyone. People have selective short memories, in six months time when the defence is tighter and conceding less goals the fans will be saying why didn't we have a tall goalkeeper before. Players come and go and we will miss them for a while but others will replace them. Only the club and the fans don't change.

All the best Daryl and thanks for the good times.

I wouldnt call Flavs a legend either. Good shot stopper and great kicking from hand or on the floor. But last season there were very few occasions where he came to our rescue and won us the match, unlike the two promotion seasons.

Imo Darryl is totally exposed as a keeper. Opposition coaches know excatly what his weakneses are. Our defending at corners and crosses last season was shambolic. And i have to say i put most of the blame at flavs feet for not being able to command his goal line let alone the six yard box in these situations.

I have no doubt if flavs was 5 or 6 inches taller he would have been a premiership keeper or even better.

But good luck to the man. Ill certainly have good memories of his earlier times with us.

Good luck Daryll I'll never forget the day you stopped the worlds greatest player from scoring at Roots Hall and made us the only team in the world to have a 100% record against the greatest team in the world!:)

Eh - how can we have a 100% record against ourselves?
