Daryl - The thinking behind it?

I have been thinking, as we all know we only offerd daryl a one year deal instead of two. If he had been offerd a two year deal it would have taken him up to hes testimonial and he would most deffinatly of stayed.

where is the logic of only offering a southend legend, a great keeper despite small areas of weakness ( height), a fans favourite and a great man for this club a one year deal. there has to be some reason?

i dont often critisise our chairmen, he obviously wants the cub to go forward. but the reason behind this is beyond me

Maybe that two year deal was simply just out of reach

EDIT - Just read somewhere punning is not allowed no more...sorry all

Urgh, bloody conspiracy theories! MAYBE it's because T and B thought that his weaknesses, which have been described by various people on here, were too much of a hindrance. I think they've always seen him as a number 2 (it was just a case of finding a decent no.1 to replace him). They maybe see his weaknesses more than we do and thought that, with no guarantee of him doing it next year, a one-year deal was in our best interests.

Darryl and Tilson have worked together for a number of years and I would be surprised if they had not worked out what was the best way forward between them - i.e. have a look around Darryl and if something comes up you fancy go for it - if not theres something here for you -

Look at the situation with Mark Gower - completely grown up - don't stand in the players way professional respect from Tilson -

I think I would much rather see "our Players" move upwards and onwards with everyones best wishes than the going through the rather uncomfortable motions that seemed to go on with Maher -

The fact we've conceded 150 goals in the last 2 seasons and the defence needs drastic surgery, starting with a keepr who cant command his area and is very weak at set pieces??

On that basis how did Barrett get a long term contract, for being cack in the Championship and really apart from being Mr Southend, is no different to the others that has left ?

Because Tilson thinks Barrett has more to offer the team than Flavs? I'm not completely convinced he's right if that is what he thinks, but people looking for weird theories about Daryl's contract are thinking too hard about it IMO. He was only offered a 1-year either because Tilly doesn't think he's that good , or because he thinks he can do better.

I think I would be right in suggesting Flavs would have been entitled to a testimonial if given any more than a 1 year contract (been at Roots since 2000).

Best O Luck to yer Daryll you've pulled off some great saves for us and put in some memorable perfomances and I thank you for that, however luck has also played its fair share in our rise to greater things, as in the Scott McLeish goal when Flavs rolled the ball ready to boot it upfield and the Northant's striker nicked it from him and put it in the net......... TBH that goal should have been allowed and if so we would still be in L2.

But Flavs always managed to redeem himself and he went on to make one of the greatest saves I'd seen since Roycie v Wet Spam stopping a point blank header from the same striker ten mins later.

However, the one year deal was probably an unfair offer, but he knew that his days as our no1 were coming to an end as his height always came into question and with two mini centre backs standing a couple inches high before him, his lack of command in the area beacme very questionable.... Collis came knocking and IMHO deserved the place as no1, but the fact that Collis jumped ship first was an indication that Flav's position as Southend no1 was coming to an end!

Good luck Daryll I'll never forget the day you stopped the worlds greatest player from scoring at Roots Hall and made us the only team in the world to have a 100% record against the greatest team in the world!:)

Maybe Tilly & Uncle Ron were sick of seeing the ball fly into the top of the net where Darryl no matter how good he is couldnt reach it......

What are they thinking.....Tilson out......

Must admit i think Darryl was past his best, he really isnt tall enough to be a top class keeper. He doesnt have the presence, and maybe Tilly and Brush have decided to go with something different

So why don't they address the fact that the rest of the team left on paper are crap!

Most of the posts seem very much on the mark. We new his strenghs and weaknesses much too well during his long service and so did our opponents.

Weaknesses are exploitable & can present a marginal achilles heel by which results to the team can be damaged over a whole season.

We need a rock. Sadly Flavs although a superb stopper not quite the immovable object.

Central defenders can play with much more confidence when they know they have a keeper behind who will take anything in the air as well.

Looking forward we must get behind the new keeper to instill his confidence and show that he is valued. Even though many are dissappointed to seen Flavs go, we must guard against channelling that against Mildenhall.

Firstly and IMO Flahavan is not a Southend legend and secondly nowhere near a great keeper. The word great as ever being over emphasised. Flavs was a fine servant for this club and a good keeper who improved greatly when he had decent competition firstly from Griemink & then from Collis. Good luck to him for securing a 3 year deal at Palace which like as not will see him warming his @rse on the bench while he sees out the duration of his contract.

He deserves our best wishes and thanks for his efforts at SUFC.

20-odd years ago I managed a Sunday League football team who were consistent, we lost almost every game until our keeper who wasn't bad couldn't play any more, he was replaced by a top keeper from the Borough Comb premier who fancied losing for a change. The new keeper was big, totally commanding the box and very very vocal -- he shouted instructions to everyone even me on the touchline. It made a complete difference and we beat 2 teams who hadn't lost for 2 years. The defence gained so much confidence as they knew he would be behind them and it made the team work together because he was guiding them.
