Danny Waldron: pros and cons

Totally hear what you're saying but do you think Waldron has been given enough of a chance? It's not like our strikers have been banging in goals either. I'd love to have seen how he would fare with a big target man (like Hopper in fact) alongside him. Or maybe on the right of a front 3.
Well a lot of the time he has had niggling injuries. I have asked before, how do you get a player match fit when you don't have a 'B' team or similar.

I thought Danny looked stronger last summer, before his injury and thought he'll be a handfull next to Cards. I guess if he goes out on loan that would say everything. Got a feeling though, Kev is quite happy to give him a few mins at a time so as not to have a reoccurance of said injury. I'd like to think he has a big part to play as we chase this double Wembley season 🙃

How many minutes, playing a way that suits you, should you be afforded before written off as a striker when you had zip service?
We are looking for players to play our system, our style of play. I’m not going to try and change how we play for a 28yo striker who hasn’t proved his worth any higher than NLN. That’s not the type of player you build a team around.

I’m also not judging solely on goals. I’m looking to see does the player have a good enough touch; are they composed on the ball; are they physically strong enough; are they mentally strong enough; do they have the stamina and discipline to press as part of a team; do they have the anticipation and aerial ability to win headers against NL centre-halves; what is their movement like; can they take coaching and are they progressing etc.

If they have all that then the goals will follow.

Waldron has played over 1000 minutes for us.

I’ve seen enough to know that Waldron isn’t going to be the main man to fire us to promotion. He might still be a depth piece, a forward who comes off the bench and provides fresh legs but Maher and co have seen even more than me (they’ve seen him train for a year) and seem to have made their mind up as well.

Given a number of comments it might be wise of the club to issue a decent update regarding Dannys " Injury" cough

I think this was always a gamble from both parties. Sadly I suspect it will be an unsuccessful one from our perspective, injuries just haven't enabled DW to get a run of appearances together. I saw glimpses last season that he might have what it takes, but as I said the injuries this season, plus the signing of Walker and Kendall means I suspect it ain't gonna work out here.

It doesn't mean it isn't 'successful' for DW. If he can get a move to another full time club, then I suspect he'd be happy, maybe even back to part time but remain in NL could be considered successful for him. Whatever happens I hope he's happy he at least rolled the dice and gave it go and, if it is the case, that he'll leave at end of contract I wish him good luck.

I would like to think that there is a bit of a plan in place to give us strength in depth in the squad. Grated, Danny is not top dog at the moment, but he has been consistently on the bench and he has had a few injury issues. I dont buy the idea that he is "not good enough" or he is out of favour, because if that was the case he would have been out on loan weeks ago. I think he has a lot to learn still, which can be achieved now we have 2 wiley pro's in Bonne and Hopper. Provided he is still working hard in training and he takes his opportunities when they come up, his time may still come. As others have said, he is unlikely to be the main man, but he is still a good impact player to come on from the bench and he gives 100% every time he pulls the shirt on. I would take that over a better, but disinterested player all day long!

We also have a slightly bigger squad than we have had in a while now, and we know there is an aspiration for a new academy, that probably wont materialise until we get back into the EFL. However, we also have more players that we can fit on the bench (which is fantastic after last season's debacle) so there could be a chance that we are building towards having full cover in every area.

But we have changed how we play and that might yet suit Waldron more. Even Walker alluded to the new set up and the extra chances it created. I doubt he is the only player to prefer it or benefit from it.

If Waldron goes out on loan or otherwise and with Wood loaned out with the departures of Jeacock, Moncur and Pepple , we would be strangely back to a squad of 21, with 3 injured ( Crowther, Miley and Ndi long term )

Just about able to make a bench of 7 again with 6 games coming up in the next 3 weeks Possibly Miley back in contention?
So maybe wise to keep Waldron as said f above for the overall squad strength

Waldron needs games. 90 minutes.. if he dosent get a crack now he never will. he would be doing himself no favours warming our bench or getting 7 minutes at the death.

Just give the lad a start as part of a front three and, if it isn't going well, hook him at half time.
