Dan Harding?

Mixed feelings............

One hand I think we are local to his Ipswich home and he also got on well from what i read with Tilly. I think we would clearly want him and he would be a first teamer here which is a massive draw for a player of his age.

On the other hand I think he could probably play a higher standard so in reality this may be a bigger draw.

Tilly would not want competition for his pal Barrett. I can't see us signing a left back for this reason alone, especially that Dorian proved that Barrett is not good (big)enough in the centre.

So Barrett wasnt any good when we won back to back promotions with him at centre back, Barrett is a good centre back the problem has been that for whatever reason clarkey and AB couldnt play together, AB alonside dorian would have been just as effective as clarke and dorian were, the key is to get someone as close to deadly dorian in the summer, spend a bit more in the aquisition of a centre back and see if johnny herd can build on his potential at left back I was impressed with him last season and would like to see him push on in the first team

Not sure I agree with your there matey, yes Barrett was in our promotion sides at centre back but correct me if I am wrong we still let in a hell of a lot of goals on our way to this. Although I appreciate his heart on sleeve attitude I still think Clarke is a far superior centre back.

dont get me wrong clarkey has been excellent last few months, I just think any decent centre back would have looked good alongside Dorian he is the dogs ****cks IMO one of the best I have seen in a southend shirt he has a big future in the game and will go on to play for france etc etc

Sorry, Barrett has been a weak link in our defence for some time. Clark has proved this season that with a decent partner he is quality. The real concern is that if we dont get either Clarke or Dorian signed up, with Barrett as our only recognised CB, we will need to buy real quality and im not sure we have the money.

And Barrett proved in 05/06 that with a decent partner he is just as good. Clarke won't be here next season and with a big defender alongside him Barrett will be fine back in the middle.

Incidentally, I spoke to a couple of Members at Spurs at the cricket yesterday who claimed that they had heard that Dervite was leaving White Hart Lane this summer.

We don't need him, our resources should be spent keeping Dervitte, we have Barrett and Herd for LB. Little fact of interest

Harding Played 20 games conceded 34 goals
Dervitte Played 18 games conceded 13 goals

Ah, but Harding scored that great goal against Leeds and DD never scored! Slightly unfair comparison, Harding was playing alongside that comedy pairing in the middle of the back row, and also with Federici more usually in goal. If Clarke goes and as I expect, we fail to sign Dervite, then I'd welcome Harding as it would allow Barrett to return to CB.

But he got substituted after 56 minutes in their game against Birmingham on Sunday. A colleague of mine who's a Reading season ticket holder said it was because he was absolute rubbish!

So he hardly made a good impression on Steve Coppell on the big stage.

And the telly said he got an ovation when he went off.

I would be happy with Harding at LB and AB/Dorian clone at centre-half.

If Clarke does sign then we should stick with Barrett at left-back.
