Post-Match Thread and Ratings Dagenham & Redbridge 0-2 Southend United

Why not? It’s okay for you to tell people that they should be ashamed of themselves but you don’t like it when you’re told to get off your high horse?

Sounds like double standards to me.

Of course he was short of confidence, I agree. But I never verbally abused him and I didn’t hear anyone else do so either.
They are paid pretty well for doing a dream job and it’s part and parcel of the game that you’re going to get judged on performance, no?
No pal no. Youre addressing me personally, im making a general point that could apply to anyone and I don't care who. Booing, ridiculing, all the stuff towards Bonne wasn't helpful. Lets reserve that for players who don't care for the shirt not just people who just need a boost. Now Bonne has that hell make people eat their words

Do feel that a nice little sing song for Bonne would also help his confidence.

Ole, ole, ole, ole
Macauley Bonne Bonne Bonne!
Macauley Bonne Bonne Bonne!

Would be great if he went on a run of goals seeing as he himself has admitted he scores in patches. Hopefully thus is tge start of a decent patch.

I’m not quite getting this whole Bonne love in stuff but pleased he scored. I don’t think it was a case of joy as such, I think it was more a case of relief and a weight off his shoulders. So far, he has failed to produce and has missed plenty of guilt edge chances, especially when he first signed. It’s nearly Feb and he has mustered up one goal. Let’s not get carried away. Fingers crossed he goes on a “run” and goes from strength to strength, starting on Tuesday.

Fair play , but I think Bonne is easily one of our best players. The service is the problem. And has been for ages

When bonne first signed, from what I understand, he wasn't given an easy welcome. Sounder like 50\50 him being a diva and our guys being sceptical.
He's not only won over his team mates but the outside doubters too. Including me. I'm Really happy he's got a goal and can see him going on to scoring quite a few. I like the guy now. Gets the crowd going, niggles the opposition, and inspires team mates.
I’ve previously admitted being sceptical and gave him a lot of stick for my perception of his lack of effort early on, he’s improved notably and I’m happy to apologise and put his early form down to lack of fitness.

From the goal celebrations and how the team applauded him at the end of the match, it certainly looks like he’s a popular member of the squad. Whilst I still think we need another option in the no 9 role, I hope Bonne can kick on now and grab some more goals.

Why does it have to be about 'deserving' to stay on. Kendall is all about relentless workrate, press etc who not conserve some of that energy for the upcoming game on Tuesday.
63 minutes vs Braintree
12 minutes vs Southport (off the bench)
60 minutes vs Barnet
57 minutes vs Dag, & Red (before we had the comfort of a 2 goal lead)

Based on your argument he can only give us 60 minutes before he loses his stamina and ability to continue his level of work rate. I would understand if we had a 2 or 3 goal lead but we all know how our 1-0 leads have been overturned this season.

Walker was one of 6 players that played all the 90 minutes. Your conservation of energy argument wears thin with me.. sorry.

I didn't agree with Kendall being made the victim again. Walker brought nothing to the game and should have been subbed.

I didn’t see the game but the decision to takeoff Kendall rather than Walker isn’t just about that game.

Maher has to manage not just the game but the squad for the rest of the season. Walker was playing against his former club (albeit Kendall had a brief loan spell there as well) and will have felt he had a point to prove. It’s good man management to give him that opportunity and not haul him off if he’s struggling a little. Maher appears to have got that balance right as we won, gave Walker a boost in confidence (or at least avoided further damaging his confidence) and gave Kendall some rest ahead of Tuesday’s match.

its a funny old game

It seems like only 5 minutes ago, before Bonne scored, Quite a few were extolling his virtues other than his goalscoring. ability i.e. hes Energetic, can head the ball, really good defensively, puts himself about, creates for others etc

Forward 5 minutes, we dont want Hopper because he does exactly the above?

A little bit left left field perhaps but if it did happen I think Hopper could be an excellent foil for Bonne when required, In some games if needs be Kendall could also come on for 30 minutes and murder the opposition with his great energy and movement

Bonne is capable of playing down the middle- the only player we have who can. But it not necessarily his natural role. He could very easily play alongside Hopper. We saw Bonne play very effectively on the right of a three against FGR was it? So I hope we get Hopper in and I think we will have a very promising forward line with options

Quite right, best not outline that we, by rights, finished 5th last season with those tactics.

You're spot on about the qualities on show yesterday, although it was a 3-4-3, not a 4-3-3. I've wanted us to have 3-4-3 in the back pocket as a Plan B for some time, but I don't think we had the right players to fit it until recently, and it won't always work like it did yesterday (again - see the start of the second half).

The second bit of your post I've bolded - we've shown those qualities in a 3-5-2 countless times in the not-too-distant past when we had a good balance and mix of players for it. The football department is looking to address that, and some good additions to the squad will, imo, make the 3-5-2 effective again.
I guess we will have to wait and see !

The first goal yesterday was brilliant to watch back.

All three of our strikers pressed perfectly. Bonne first which unsettled Justham and forced him to play a silly ball to the CB. Kendall then pressed that CB who in turn played an even more stupid ball which was pressed excellently by Walker. The rest is history.

Absolutely spot on execution that was. More of the same please.
Indeed, it was like when maher first started.

We used to press the hell out of opponents score a couple then sit back and see it out.

In some ways it seems that our plan b of seeing out the game with a staunch 3-5-2 inc miley and husin grafting away after we were goals up has somehow become our plan A.

Sometimes it wont work, but lets bloody go for it and fear nowone.

I'm glad some of the wiser posters are giving Kev credit for the substitution of Kendall. There were a few sat around me who took it as a negative play, but it was simply to nullify the extra man in midfield and it worked more or less instantly.

As people have said, the fixation on formations is a little odd. We don't play with 5 at the back and never have. We go out to win every game we play. It's not worked this season for various reasons but the system we have been playing for most of this year was absolutely fine last year. It is the personnel on the pitch that have not necessarily performed how we want them to.

I've found a lot of the stick handed out to our manager this season utterly baffling.

Showing his joy - Southend United striker Macauley Bonne (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

A DELIGHTED Macauley Bonne spoke of his relief after scoring his first Southend United goal in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Having failed to score in his first 24 matches for the Shrimpers, Bonne broke the deadlock just before the break at Victoria Road.

And the 29-year-old striker showed just how much the goal meant to him during his memorable celebrations.

“It was massive weight off my shoulders because adding goals to my game is the one thing I need to do,” said Bonne.

“I can’t lie, it’s been tough.

“Not just here but it’s been a tough few years for me in football.

“I’ve been going from club to club trying to find a home and really get settled in.

“I’ve come here and I have really enjoyed my football but it’s just been about getting that first goal.”

Bonne had already seen an earlier effort ruled out for offside before he fired home a square pass from Charley Kendall to put the Shrimpers in front.

And the goal finally saw the forward rewarded for his work ethic.

“I’ve been working my absolute plums off,” said Bonne.

“I know it might not seem like it from the outside in but I put the graft in every day on and off the pitch.

“I’m 29 but I’m still hungry to score goals and the reaction today was it just all coming over.

“Hopefully this is the first of many now too.”

Bonne was joined on the score-sheet by Gus Scott-Morriss as Kevin Maher’s side deservedly picked up all three points.

And the striker now wants to make this a turning point in his season.

“The only way is up from here and I’m not taking my foot off the gas,” said Bonne “I want to help us get back up the league.

“We go again Tuesday now and I’m backing myself to keep scoring.

“I’ve always scored in patches and hopefully I’ll do that again.”

Blues remain 14th in the National League standings ahead of Tuesday night’s rearranged clash with AFC Fylde at Roots Hall.

But Bonne remains hell bent on helping the Shrimpers get closer to the play-off places.

“I’m not here to play games and have a jolly up,” stressed Bonne.

“I’m here to try and get this club back in the Football League.

“I’ve been very critical of myself, I go home after games and mull over how I’ve got to do something different.

“But today I went out with the mentality of going out to be the striker I was years ago when I was playing with freedom and a smile on my face.”

Bonne had plenty to celebrate after the game with his name being sung loudly by the travelling Shrimpers supporters.

And he was also congratulated by those watching on from afar.

“I checked my phone just now and I’ve got so many messages from people saying it’s about time,” smiled Bonne.

“It is about time too because I’ve been known as being a goalscorer and I’ve come here to score goals which I haven’t done.

“I’ve been annoyed myself.”

However, Bonne has now broken his duck and relished his role as part of a front three.

“I had two strikers on the pitch to help me and it really did,” said Bonne.

“I’m the more experienced one and I don’t mind having to get my head kicked in.

“I’m happy to be the one who has to go and battle and do the nitty gritty.

“It was good but I got a bit excited after the goal and was probably a bit of a headless chicken but that’s how happy I am to play football.

“I can’t wait for Tuesday now.”
