Cyprus

Change of plan. The people we are going with are on quite a tight budget, and after a few trips form Southend Airport I really cant be arsed with going to Gatwick any more. How about Alicante? Any good?

Great beaches.
(Funnily enough I'm trying to get the wife to opt for Galicia instead.Be a lot cooler there).:smiles:

Went to Alicante when the hogueras/festival of san juan was on. Fantastic fun. Went to A Corunna (with beach) and Lugo (inland no beach) in Galicia and both interesting, as well as Santiago La Compostela (no beach). All along the Northern coast lovely. Gijon, Bilbao and San Sebastian/Donostia I can personally recommend and all have nice beaches. Makes you appreciate "Spain" in a whole different way. Cheers.

on a side-note... we're off to Egypt next week... at least until they say we can't go anyway! Keeping my eye on late availability deals just in case!

Where are you heading? Got a friend out there who is a resort manager for Thomsons.

Sharm, which is probably the safest place to go really. Not all that fussed either way, as will get our money back if FCO change the status to advise against travel, and if they don't happy days. On the negative side, won't get to see the pyramids, but may do the Petra trip instead

Well, he's in that area! PM your hotel details Dave and I'll get him to look out for you if your hotel is in his remit - might work to your benefit!

We went to Sharm with Thomson in 2011 when it all kicked off the first time. We were advised against travelling to Cairo so we flew to Luxor for the day instead, thoroughly recommend it. We went to the Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Luxor temples and had lunch on the Nile. We stayed at the Reef Oasis Blue Bay Resort and Spa!!! Loved it. Also you definitely need to go diving but make sure you take or hire a wet suit as the water was freezing (that was in February though!!)

I was in Sharm at the same time. Felt very safe with all the security around during the day. Bumping into a gang of bedouins in a nightclub wasn't my wisest move though... Came back in one piece :-)

I forgot about all the security road blocks with guards and guns!

Certainly agree with what you've written about Northern Spain here. It's off the mainstream tourist map and all the better for it.

I worked for a year in San Sebastian and it's a wonderful place (when it's not raining). Also had a family holiday in Asturias a few years back and went on a driving holiday in Galicia with my younger brother (not Shrimpero, the other one) back in the day.

Galicia (and possibly Northern Portugal) is where we'll finally be heading for again this year.

Alicante is my favorite part of Spain, great beaches, marina and promenade (for want of a better word) At the risk of going off topic, looking at Portugal next year and have heard it can be even hotter than Spain. Any truth in this?

Yup,certainly can be hotter in July and August.I've only ever been to Northern Portugal at this time of year and that was hot enough for me.
Lisbon is currently 36 degrees centigrade (30 here today).Only ever been to Lisbon and the Algarve at Easter, so I can't really compare, (although it was certainly hotter than it usually is here).
Our younger daughter, who visited a friend in the Algarve a year ago in June, said it was like the Costa Brava in July/August.

As this is turning into a Judith charmers fest, I'm off to Sardinia in September with wife and little one (18 month). Any recommendations on things to do?

A chap i work with comes from Sardinia... and also turns into its self profesed tourist board representative, whenever he gets drunk. If we go out for some beers between now and September, i will make a note of what he says (assuming i'm not equally as drunk), and be sure to pass on!
