Crap with money

In addition to what everyone has already said, sort your debts out.

Try and pay your credit card debts off as soon as possible and once you've done this set up a direct debit to pay your credit card bill in full every month. You don't want to be borrowing money on credit cards or going overdrawn. That's an easy way to burn your money. Used sensibly, credit cards can save you money, but you need to pay them off in full every month (unless you've got an introductory 0% for X months type offer, when you need to pay it off by the end of that offer period).

This is what I do, I have all my bills etc coming out on the same day that I get paid then split whatever is left over usually 4 weeks until I get paid again. It works for me!

This, and no overdraft/credit cards (or one credit card left with someone you trust to only let you have it in a complete emergency). A few months of living off rice for the final week because you've overspent, and you'll soon learn.

I did!

If you have children you can save quite a bit of money by feeding them on cheap ready meals from Iceland and buying less fresh meat, fish, fruit and vegetables.

Exactly, so making your own lunch for work is a good start!

A decent compromise is to make yourself a packed lunch Monday to Thursday, or Wednesday if desperate. And have Friday's (plus Thursday if needed) take out lunch as a reward for the sacrifice you've made over the rest of the week. Also if you look at some of your outlays, are you the one, when out in a group of five, and have six rounds, that always lands up paying for the second round ?

One thing I did years ago which worked for me. If I knew I'd saved a pound by cutting back I used to put 50p away in one jar and 50p in another. Once this built up I used to pay one jar into the bank and use the other to spend on myself. Clothes, essentials or just a good old night on the town. Do this a couple of times and its amazing how much willpower it gives you to continue the trend.

One other neat one is an direct debit say around £20 a week , into a savings account . Ignore it (you soon will after a while) its the internet version of putting money in a jar etc . You not spending it and it's there for if you need little emergencies ;-)

You could have a slightly smaller Breakfast on Matchday's mate.

Basic Version
Keep a very accurate copy of how much you have in the Bank.
Spend half hour each month checking your Bank statement against your own record.
Try and work towards a sitution where you are one month ahead of your bills.
Always think before you buy something - Can I afford it? If you cant afford it dont buy it.

More in depth

Do all of the above.
Get an offest mortgage - eg Virgin one account.
Get interest free credit card. Buy everything on the card till you hit the limit whilst allocating what you would have spent within a seperate "compartment" in you One Account. EG Rack up 10 grand on a CC and have the money ready to pay but dont pay till the interest free period expires. In the mantime this money is offsetting against you mortgage blance, thereby reducing the interest payment.
In the meantime, carry on making your usual monthly mortgage payment, which means you are overpaying every month therby reducing what you need to pay even further.
When the interest free period runs out on the card, get another one and carry on as you were.
You will probably find your mindset changes from spend spend spend to save save save and when you do buy something you really want you will appreciate it more.
