So yesterday on the tele, an MP comes on giving advice, normal stuff, wash hands warm water, 20 seconds or more, don't touch face. Then says, ''And everyone should carry one of these around with them'', and holds up a hand gel. Ggrr. So annoying, as I've been looking for it for 2 weeks. He's living in a different world to the general public, as I've looked everywhere, and can't find even one. I wanted some for me, my daughter and a couple of elderly neighbours that keep asking me to get some for them. Has anyone seen any locally? Not online.

They were giving it away for free at work although it took a couple of kicks to get the dispenser of the wall.

I’ve got to pop to the shops shortly, I’m in Braintree not much of a help to you but will report on what it’s like. The wife said they’ve limited people to buying only 1 pack of paracetamol per customer.

All soap was gone at ASDA Shoebury yesterday. Every kind of soap. All toilet rolls gone of course, but also all the kitchen rolls, gone. An assistant said people were buying the kitchen roll to use as toilet paper. Could be a lot of blocked toilets coming up.

You can make your own with surgical spirit, videos on you tube. I've even heard you can use wray and nephew overproof rum as it is over 60% alcohol, so all you need is a small bottles to dispense it into. I've nicked a big bottle of hand sanitizer from work so just need to dispense it.

An expert last week said don't make your own hand gel. Here's some of the reasons. He also said don't use 60% proof or above alcohol like Rum, as it's a different type of alcohol. He said to wait until stocks of sanitisers are replenished.

Most of the countless recipes out there use a mix of 91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol (also known as rubbing alcohol) and aloe vera gel, which is necessary to add moisture to your skin because alcohol will dry it out. In these recipes, the typical ratio is two thirds rubbing alcohol to one third of a cup of aloe vera gel.

Even if you follow that recipe, you can still mess it up. Mixing it at home, you can't control how the alcohol gets diluted in the final product. If you don't use enough aloe gel, it will dry out the skin on your hands, which can cause it to crack or bleed (the same is true if you just pour rubbing alcohol on your skin).

But if you don't use enough alcohol, the final product won't be as effective at killing germs as store-bought hand sanitizer -- rendering it basically useless according to some experts. You can also contaminate your batch with bacteria by not using clean tools to mix it together.

The final issue is that because of the popularity of these homemade hand sanitizers, the ingredients are now harder to come by. So even if you want to make it, you might not be able to find rubbing alcohol and aloe vera at your local drugstore.

I'd imagine like human beings, that a good cold snap would help kill it off. Warm weather will just make it flourish.

So the moral of that tale of woe is avoid eating dry pasta as it will probably give you a headache and diarrhea.

Schools will be shut for easter anyhow. Has anyone thought who'll pick up the childcare if schools shut? The grandparents - as it's highly unlikely that parents will also stay off work. And you think those kids will patiently sit at home for two weeks?

Yes agree totally. Parents will still have to earn at work so who looks after young children, the grandparents perhaps? The very people at high risk. I agree that things are being delayed but that is the most sensible thing to be doing. You can't shut down the country for months on end it's impractical and impossible to enforce. Staggering reaction is the right thing to do and will give services a chance to cope.
Other reacting and panic are the biggest enemies here ATM.

They’ve now introduced a new handover process at work. We are doing remote handovers, have a one way system through the office, banned anyone other than operations staff and full office wipe downs/sanitisation if anytime someone breathes. We will do all of this to protect ourselves from the AM or PM shift but still have to go through security and could catch it there.

Another three jobs cancelled for next week - and, meanwhile caring CPBC have allowed another three taxis onto the circuit, where the main cab company owner will continue collecting his £95 a week circuit fee per car while taxis are queued up at the station waiting in vain for the now trickle of passengers coming off trains. So glad Kev's off of that vile man's circuit and at least working for himself now.
