Coronavirus (Non-Politics)

My other half's auntie died today, she was a nurse and got the vaccine about 10 days ago. Apparently the reasoning is that she had covid already several weeks ago and she had the vaccine dose on top which sent her into a bad state. Asks a lot of questions

Sad news. How old was she if you don't mind?

So the headlines say 10million jabbed and the worst is passed etc.
AND
Today's shop at Sainsbury Weir, and compared to previous weeks, there were, (in my small snapshot time there), more couple shopping groupings, more nose free maskers, more touch, pick up, put downers.
Over a year and still there appears to be something amiss with manys' understanding.

Did the weekly shop at Morrisons in Hadleigh, around noon. Very relaxed in there, car park half empty.
Security on doors making sure people wearing masks, but like you, i noticed a lot more of the 'touch, pick ups, put downers'.
No idea why they do it with the pre-packed veg, it's all the same weight & the same 'sell by' date!!.

Not sure exactly but know it is early 60's, can ask my other half when she is home from work.

Thats fine mate. Just the age group is ok.

When you say she had covid. Do you mean was actually ill or just tested positive without symptoms?

Bringing this slightly back on topic, the news yesterday about the benefits of the AZ vaccine is probably the most important news we've had since the original Pfizer vaccine trial results. It's hard to understate how important this is.

The study shows that not only is the vaccine having real-world benefits in terms of avoiding symptomatic COVID for a good period of time, but that the strategy to delay the booster through 3 months is fine (maybe improves efficacy). Also, and maybe most importantly, the study shows that the vaccine is reducing transmission, which is absolutely massive news.

This thumbs up for delayed 2nd dose is for AZ, the Pfizer jab is recommended by them that 2nd jab is 21 days later and no studies have deviated from that recommendation for Pfizer - that correct?

It’s correct that no studies so far have looked at Pfizer with anything different from the 21 day dosing interval.

the government have recommended that both Pfizer and AZ should have the second dose anywhere between 4-12 weeks later, to enable the prioritisation of first doses.

going forward the AZ vaccine will be the main one being used

Thanks. My Mum had Pfizer jab in Benfleet last week, I said I’d call the clinic 2 weeks later to request another appointment at 21 days. If she’d been given AZ then medical science says she can wait, but I want it done properly and if the original Pfizer terms still stand then that’s what I’ll ask to happen.

I imagine the Police are keeping an eye on the parks making sure people with kids are not congregating, with all this snow.

It's really sad, kids love the snow, living in the South East, we don't get much.

Children having fun, how terrible. I have seen groups of them openly laughing and having fun on the beach in front of me. Judging by the smiles on the parents faces, not are they only encouraging it. They look only to glad to be having a break from home schooling.

Still no excuse for such bad a parenting and not a police officer in site. They are never there when you need them the most.

According to the BBC the chances of catching Covid outdoors is minimal. Some claims that if you speak to someone for 15 minutes there's a chance. Even anything in your spit or snot dies much quicker in sunlight.

Anyway this is nothing you don't know anyway. Work outside and you rarely get colds. Work indoors or have to much stuffy heating and your far more likely.

We were all outdoors in the summer thats when the infection rates were lowest. So take your kids or grandchildren out for some fun in the snow today. If they get into a snowball fight with other kids enjoy the moment. They need it, so do you and you will never get this time back.

Those of you who are nervous at the moment.....Stay indoors because you have had your fun in the snow when you were young and its certainly not kids swamping the NHS. Its time to stop this national child abuse.

I get your point kids should play but I wouldn't call it national child abuse.

Where I live (Leigh) you could hear all the kids out in the garden and parents playing out in the street with the younger ones. That was about 10.00, so I'm assuming the teachers let them play outside for a while before home schooling continued.

Is there actually any evidence you can catch COVID from just touching something at a supermarket? And surely if everyone's sanitising their hands, it shouldn't matter... This pandemic has turned people a bit germaphobic.

Don't see any problem as long as people are wearing masks and social distancing.Thought recent evidence had confirmed that passing on the virus through touching an infected surface was pretty much a non-starter.

I've had the call from my surgery, and at 08:46 on Thursday I will join the growing ranks of AstraZenica sourced vaccination statistics. I look forward to featuring on BBC East that evening.

My 'other half' ( 69 ) got a call from her Dr's this afternoon, offering her a first vaccine on Weds at Benfleet Clinic on the High Rd.
They didn't say which one she will have.

At first the theory was that the virus was spread by surfaces (fomites). But what we've found out is that actually its transmissibility seems to come predominately from aerosols (e.g. breathing it in). This is why we see a lot of transmission occurring in workplaces where ventilation is poor, and in bars and houses and places of worship, even if surfaces are cleaned and people regularly wash their hands. I don't think it's a bad thing to encourage handwashing etc, but masks are important and social distancing is important. I think there's very little evidence that fomite transmission really happens in real life. A lot of the studies are unrealistic, but suggest there is a theoretical risk.

The transmission equation is drive by:
- indoors/outdoors - much less likely for the virus to be transmitted outdoors. If indoors, then fresh air needs to recirculate
- time spent there
- proximity and number of people
- exertion (e.g. shouting or heavy breathing)

So this is why amateur/grassroots football may restart outside, but indoor training or group gym classes may have to wait.
