Our road held front garden pinics to celebrate VE Day and many had put up bunting for the day. All the families that took part remained on their own properties and observed social distancing. Nobody is outside now and nobody took advantage of the lock-down protocols. Oh, and by the look of things everyone enjoyed themselves.

Our front garden is on quite a steep slope so we did ours in the back garden and then went for a walk. Everyone was doing pretty much the same thing. We even walked passed one of the teachers at my youngest's school, whilst telling the boys to walk in the road to avoid the people sitting on the pavement.

Yes, true. However, took my son down to talk to my parents through their window yesterday, so they could see him on his birthday, and my mum said something worrying - that they feel like they're "deteriorating" being inside and unable to go anywhere. Hearing yesterday that someone said old folks could be on lockdown till well into next year was truly depressing for them.

She goes for a short walk every day, about a mile, but dad can't really manage that, so she goes on her own. These are two octogenarians who usually do voluntary driving 5 days a week, taking people on appointments through the Castle Point social car scheme. I've always thought of them as strong people, but what she said really shocked me.

I suggested they went for a short drive, to Battlesbridge perhaps, for a change of scenery. I took them fish and chips last week which they were really grateful for. We do need to really think about our elderly - and about their spiritual needs as well as their practical ones.
Chin up OBL we are having the same experiences with my wifes 88 year old Mum up here in Scotland........ we are trying so hard on a daily basis to boost her spirits and keep her going until hopefully we come out the other side of this. Be strong fellow Shrimpers.

You can be sure that as much as Spain wants Brits (and others) to return to its beaches asap, there'd have to be a quid pro quo if a fortnight's quarantine were imposed on international travellers.

I think I read the other day, that Majorca has been hit particularly hard by all this, and they’re desperate for the return of tourism, and especially the Brits, which is tragically ironic, considering their protests from a few years ago.

Incidentally, I can’t see traditional tourism returning to normal, for at least 12-months yet, and even then it’s dependant on how hard this inevitable second spike hits.

Well it would appear lockdown has finished. London parks filled full of people getting drunk. Once again another hot bank holiday weekend has brought out all of the selfish ****s! **** everyone else who has stuck to the rules and the restrictions. You are an embarrassment to this country and I really hope your actions don’t lead to you losing someone close to you to the virus!

I have lost all faith and love for this country. Full of ****ing selfish idiots who all they care about is themselves, **** everyone else.

I would have said that atm Majorca is keener to get the Germans back ,particulary those who own/rent second homes on the island and not the sort of young Brits who pollute Malaguf with their anti-social antics every summer.

Incidentally,I'm sure your conclusion is correct.

As some travel person pointed out on the radio today, if someone is flying and has a two week quarantine in this country on return, and a two week quarantine in another country applicable, that may be one or two weeks for example in the destination for any travel reason, and four weeks in quarantine. Who's going to want that? People will probably go next year when the quarantine doesn't apply.

Parts of Italy the local tourist board are going to be subsidising the costs of flights to boost the tourism industry, Sicily I believe being the first

I'd guess the Spanish government will get round to doing something similar especially for flights to the islands, in particular The Canaries, which is already in Phase 1 of the government's exit strategy to the lockdown.

Can't really see anyone, in their right mind, wanting to fly again before a vaccine to the virus is found.

I thought most Germans sold up in Spain and the Islands. Weren't their pensions linked to those properties and there was some kind of crash? I know an awful lot came onto the market around the Alicante area and they were almost giving them away. I was very tempted to try and buy a place in La Marina but bottled it in the end. Have Germans started reinvesting over again in the last few years?

I certainly don't have any specialist knowledge of Mallorca or the propery market there.I was just quoting what I'd heard in the Spanish media about the islanders wanting German (high end) tourists back asap.Though Muti did say recently that Germans wouldn't be able to take their holidays in Spain any time soon.Would appear that HMG is not the only entity giving out mixed messages. :Winking:

My flight to NY was obviously cancelled 10 days ago, & have re-booked for end of Sept with Delta.
They are insisting passengers wear masks, although will have to obviously remove them for food & drink. They are flying with 40% capacity with both window seats occupied & the middle one only in the centre row, 3 out of 7 seats being used.
Irrelevant of if you've booked 1st class, business class or economy, they will be loading from the back of the aircraft first, so 1st class passengers will be last on!.
Also suggested they would have a 'caretaker/cleaner' on board, to constantly sanitise & clean the toilets.
Over 4 1/2 months before my flight, lets wait & see what happens?.

Is that not in breach of EU regulations on fair trading rules and competition being un nationalistic?
It's been done before, Iceland for one. If my memory is correct Ryanair stopped a few routes once the assistance stopped to the annoyance of those who had bought places there on the basis it was a cheap-to-get-to destination?

I agree with you in principle, but in truth, with the current state of the economy on the island, it won’t be long before the Majorcan’s are begging for some drinking contests, wet T-shirt competitions & gratuitous violence courtesy of some gattered up northerners ?

Nice part of the world that. Guardamar (just up the road) rivals any beach on this planet.

From what I know, a large portion of that area (and 10-miles further southwards) are owned largely by Scandinavians.

Certainly a lot last time I was over there. Guardamar is lovely but bloody expensive for property. I looked into opening a campsite near there but prices for land purchase or rent were way too rich for my blood.

Did you see the irony of where the photos were taken that were doing the rounds, London Fields? Underneath their feet are the remains of where thousands of victims of the plague were buried centuries ago.

Southend sea front was also reportedly mobbed, with the hospital apparently tweeting that they expected to be busy as a result, in a fortnight.

Yes, I have friends who live in Tenerife and they are hopeful that they will be able to take tourists before the summer is over.

No I didn’t see that, makes my blood boil! It’s annoying for those of us sticking to the rules. What hasn’t helped is having two bank holiday weekends with amazing weather.

When the second wave hits I bet it’s worse than the first one because of these idiots.

One wonders what proportion of said idiots are out there doing their thang on a Thursday @ 8 ? That's assuming they're able to put two hands together and make a noise.....
