Computer help needed please

Firefox is a highly configurable browser, so if you goto Tools -> Add-ons -> Get Extensions.

Then you will be taken to the Mozilla site which allows you to look at extensions you wish to add. However beware that the more add-ons you install the more chance you have slowing down Firefox to IE levels.

Cheers Bob.......think i might avoid any add-ons then. My PC seems to have slowed right down this past week or so. God knows why.

The ones i have mentioned should not affect you, but some people get extension happy and install 20 or 30 of them and then wonder why they have issues.

For you I would recommend Adblock Plus and the British English Dictionary(This baby will spell check your post automatically for you).

Excuse me young man...you not read the name under my Avatar??

Now I am not saying you do not know your words or do not have such an extended vocabulary. However none of our typing is always spot on, so a built in spell checker is a great help.

That is probably down to me hitting the wrong keys on the keyboard!!!

This is pretty nifty, it creates a little dotted line under a wrongly spelt word just like MS Word.

But it is all about content and not spelling so i was led to believe by a certain person!!!!

Woooosshhh, look at that long cast!

:net:

Phil, all flaws with browsers are widely documented, although the stats do show that Firefox has less recorded than IE. Now as you say every browser will have its flaws but it is the way the organisations behind the browsers respond to such security issues.

Micro$oft are known to drag their heals on releasing fixes to IE and sometimes even ignoring some, hoping that do not get too big. As Mozilla is open source and community based, fixes are worked on much quicker as they have more developers at their disposal, the joys of open source code.

All true as things stand.

I suppose my real point is, how secure would Firefox be if everyone used it? I'm not 100% sure but I believe the current rate is thought to be 90% IE, 10% others. I think our users are slightly more Firefox oriented for poker but more IE oriented for sports. Anyway, if everyone on the net used Firefox then the only browser to exploit would be Firefox and more time would be put in to trying to gain a financial advantage through it. It could be that the increase in the number of users would help increase the security but I feel that anyone who would have some input to give on making the browser more secure would probably already be having their say.

Interesting article here on hacking and piracy. Not technical, in case anyone's scared off!

Firefox is definately the way forward, you've done the right thing AS

It does appear to be a lot better than IE7....you know that you spelt defiantly wrong!!!

It has put a wiggly red line under the word mate....sorry

Haha no worries, I ALWAYS get that word wrong. Force of habit. For some reason the spell checker has gone from my firefox, I'll get it back now..

EDIT: At this time of night, I'm pretty useless, can't find it doing a quick search on the mozilla site.

sufcintheprem;656981 I suppose my real point is said:
I truly believe that as Firefox is open source it is more adept at being fixed for security issues, history has shown that when a vulnerability about Firefox has been disclosed it will be fixed within the week, sometimes the people who find the flaw actually provide the fix as the source code is available to them unlike IE.

Also as the piece you brought up shows, most hackers are out to get the MAN, not the private user or the open source community. Of course there is more criminal subset determined to get our banking details and such like that we still need to be aware of. IE is hacked mainly because it is the browser from Micro$oft not because it is just the mostly used browser.

Oh by the way as of Jan 2008 in Europe, IE had 66% market share whilst Firefox was upto 28% and Opera and Safari taking the rest.

The motives of hackers is certainly quite interesting. I would agree that most of them are showing off their talents or proving a point to an organisation they deem unethical or perhaps arrogant. It's just the potential to hold data for ransom on an individual level or the murkier area of corporate espionage/sabotage that would be more worrying. If a criminal group recruited the most talented people they could find with a mixed wage/PRP, I could see people getting lured in

Just you wait until Firefox 3, I have been testing since it first went into Beta and it has some cool additional things, also it does seem to render much faster.

Also if you are like me and need to test sites and web hardware against both browsers then IE Tab extension is a must.

The extensions I recommend are

Adblock Plus
British English Dictionary
FireFTP
Foxtrick (Hattrick Players)
IE Tab

How come I can't find the British English Dictionary add on?

I've just installed NoScript, and already its popped up saying SZ is trying to do something. I didn't install it to stop it doing it, just more being curious to see what is being run on my computer. Any ideas how I can find out more details about each script run?
