Was home by 10:50! :)

Mildy - 5 didn't seem 100% fit 2nd half, kept holding his side and stretching.
Francis - 6
Malone - 5 poor set pieces, certainly not his best game
M'Voto - 5 Very shaky start, improved by the end of the game
Barrett - 4 most embarrassing goal i've witnessed
Scannell - 8 best game by some way, now come on Damian, keep it up.
Moussa - 6 please play Moussa in centre midfield. Looks more at home there
Christophe - 6 one of his better games recently
Watt - 6 not involved much as Scannell had the ball most of the time! Showed some nice touches though
Spencer - 7 unselfish worker for the team
Laurent - 5 too selfish after so much good work getting in to good positions.

Paterson - 6 had one chance after coming in, good save I think from the keeper.

Pitch - 0

What did Malone do to **** you two off so much then? I didn't think he was too bad, a couple of bad crosses aside (when I say a couple, I admittedly mean 70%)

He was definitely no worse than Watt.

Malone is coming in for a bit to harsh critisism because of the Herd debate, I agree with all that Herd should be in, but Malone isn't doing terrible, he should be of the set pieces list though, just because he has a left foot doesnt mean he is a good option for set pieces!

a great night out with a some great Shrimpers and some whiskey sold in the ground .....wahey ......... the football gods decided to humiliate Adam Barrett (I dunno why) - they do this from time to time - and Tilsons Soutrhend played with pride on a pitch barely fit for amateurs let alone a team that like to play good football -

its surprising to see as many as 5 thousand people turn up to watch Boothroyds ugly little team but I suppose it was good for them to see some real football supporters in the flesh -

funnily enough not at all downhearted or even pi55ed off - doesn't really count as a game of football anymore than when i beat my kid brothers on the beach -

have you seen two worse goals all season - ?

A night of real frustration. I don't think we got a single break in any department.

The opening goal, after just 4 minutes, summed up exactly how the night went. Mvoto slips, Mildenhall slips, Barrett gets stuck in the mud. It doesn't get much more comical. Annoyingly, we were the better sides for large chunks of the game. Col U didn't know how to handle Scannell and at times Laurent. Yet, we created few chances. Both sides, who prefer to keep the ball on the deck, were undone by the pitch which was unplayable throughout.

We really went for them in the second half, and looked more likely to get a goal. Then we concede a corner and give away another ridiculous goal with both Mvoto and Barrett on their knees and Mildy berating his absent defence. When we did get the ball in the net, it was harshly chalked off (the number of texts from non-Southenders back that up). Laurent was frustrating, twice shaking off defenders only to greedily shoot (and miss) when Spencer was in a far better position. It was the sort of night when you want to smack your head against a wall.

On the positive side, it was the best team performance for a while, certainly better than the dross served up at Millwall and that terrible first period at home to Swindon. Scannell at long last looked the player many of us think he could be, Francis (despite a few momentary lapses of concentration) looked a threat going forward. However, it does not mask the fact that players are still getting used to each other, learning each others way and still have a lot of work to do in the teamwork category.

Mildy 6.5

Francis 5

Barrett 6.5 besides the howler

Mvoto 5

Malone 4.5

Scannell 8

Christophe 5 non-existent

Moussa 4 - non-existent

Watt 5 - couldnt last the pace, match fitness poor

Spencer 5

Laurent 6.5

Patterson 6

Pitch - JOKE

Didn't go but you can look at it two ways I think.
A performance like that with an extremely bare squad was good but we were just unlucky alot of the night OR if we want to win games we have to test the keeper more than we did at least with the chances we half created and that if you're going to win you have to make sure with every single kick that you've taken the conditions into consideration. I just hope we can escape relegation for obvious reasons.

Quite glad i stayed at home in the nice and warm watching on TV. We played well but 2 soft goals caused by the pitch meant defeat.

Col U fans non-existent, heard our fans more (WELL DONE TO THOSE THAT WENT!!!)

Ratings

Mildenhall - 8 (no chance with either goals did well)
Malone 6 (Set pieces????. Time we played Johnny Herd)
Mvoto 7 (another 2 weeks and he'll be fit)
Barrett 7 (felt sorry for him about the first goal, 50/50 on disallowed goal)
Francis 6.5 (only seems 75% switched on, over hits his crosses which we knew)
Watt 7 (patchy, will probably be here for the rest of the season not prem/champ class)
Moussa 7.5 (first half i'd give him 5 but improved in the second, not attacking enough playing with Christophe)
Christophe 7 (Defensive midfielder needs to become more of a play maker)
Scannell 8.5 MOM (Revolutionary, was it because he was on TV????? Thought he was a lazy waster before this game, changed my mind now)
Laurent 7.5 (what is the french for STOP BEING A GREEDY *******. Your a ****ing target man mate stop trying to be a striker)
Spencer 7 (Nothing on, Laurent didn't help would start with Laurant and Paterson next game)

Subs
Paterson 7 (Did ok, looked more lively than Spencer)

Tilson
Errrr! maybe another sub or two earlier - 7.5

Ref
Can't remember his name but he did ok, spot on with most stuff although 50/50 disallowed Barrett goal was his biggest call - 8

Col U
They'll miss automatic and probably lose in playoffs. Pitch is a joke and they should be fined.

I've just about thawed out now and I'm still glad I went despite the nonsense of a pitch, the vigilante-style security men (who seemed to be up for a fight from the moment the game ended) and the obligatory coach queue. The Southend support was great up until the second goal when we seemed to tire like the team. I couldn't really hear the Colchester support (such as they were) although their return of our "There's only one Adam Barrett" was quite funny I suppose.

Colchester's tactics were simple and effective - hoof the ball up to the two big guys up front and wait for the defence to fall over in the mud. Platt played well but there was none of the flowing football of the Lambert era.

As for us, the positives were that Scannell added some penetrating balls into danger areas to his obvious industry and Laurent went past players regularly, although he still can't find the right final ball. Moussa had his best game in a while (memories of last year?) and M'Voto was starting to look like the player we saw at the start of the season. Christophe had a decent game too on the whole.

On the negative side, Malone showed once again why he shouldn't be taking set pieces. In those conditions a decent ball in could have caused chaos but he couldn't find one for love nor money. I'm still annoyed that Herd has to sit on the bench - he's better in every department from what I can see. To be fair, Francis had a mare too. He is a proper footballer and was affected by the mud more than most but you have to play to the conditions and he just couldn't find a blue shirt in the second half. Spencer missed two good chances - in the first, it was easier to score than miss.

I still think that we'll be OK with Vernon and Baldwin back in the side but we're moving into squeaky bum time and Ron Martin's warning of the necessity of Championship football for us seems ludicrous at the moment.

Ok, problem was it was yet another enforced change of personnel that had had little time to do a great deal in training together, we'll see it again on Saturday when Baldwin, Vernon and Macca are back. For me I reckoned 2nd half we were crying out for Dougie's brain as a way to get Spencer or Patterson in on goal and I'd have taken Franny off for him.

Mildy - 5, had time to dive on that ball still for the first goal it was travelling so slowly, and then the 2nd he just stood there berating everyone when he really should have done better when the ball went across goal. For a big bloke that was not a good performance, although he did make a couple of good saves. Looks low on confidence again.
Franno - 7, Simon had a good game, kept their winger quiet and played well both defensively and in attack.
M'voto - 6, wobbily in the first half but improved in the second, few more games needed yet to be anything like he was. Baldwin back in on Saturday please.
Barrett - 5, struggled with Platt and then Gillespie all night, poor Adam, sometimes you're just fated to have a 'mare on Sky.
Malone - 6, don't get it why some are so hard on him, defensively he did well, the only problem was set piece delivery and that's easily solveable - don't let him do it!
Scannell - 8 MOTM, very encouraging performance from Damien, they didn't know how to play him and Tierney should've been carded a couple of times for the tackles he put in on him. Some good crosses, but like Laurent there were instances were Spencer was in a better position so looking before shooting still needs to be encouraged.
Moussa - 7, much more Mousse like performance, especially in the 2nd half and had the balls for a very good long range strike.
Jeff - 6, couple of decent speculative through balls to the youngsters and some bustling tackling going on in defence. I'm not sure people really understand his role.
Watt - 6, lots of running and looked confident enough, I think our league will be a shock to him somehow! Good defensive work though as well.
Laurent - 6, not a fan of his up front, and still believe he's better as the wide man, some great attacking runs and shots to be fair and normally we'd be quite happy that he was shooting, he's not played much with Spencer so is just not used to looking for him.
Spencer - 7, good game from Scotty, think he will do very well alongside Vernon. Made himself available and was more than happy to get in the mix.

Patterson for Spencer - 7, looked much more like it coming on but still would've liked to see the two youngsters up front together, probably a fitness thing still with Spencer though.

A few other comments, tactics were poor....again. At 2-0 down we should've gone for it, Dougie could've come on and changed that game, him and Patterson for Laurent and Christophe. Lino on our left was truly appalling and the ref was not great either. If in doubt give it to Colchester. The pitch was truly awful, the club ought to be fined for calling it a "playing surface", the PA system was not much better! Top marks though for having IPA on sale plus wine and spirits, and a very nice balti pie!

We though, were awesome! Fantastic atmosphere, well done to all that made the effort.

Mildy - 7 Some fantastic saves
Francis - 6.5 Not bad but was weak at times
M'Voto - 5.5 Still recovering from his injury obviously, like Swindon, he had a badstart but improved
Barrett - 6.5 Was good after the goal, solid and should have had a goal
Malone - 5.5 Wasted too many set pieces and didn't put many, if any, good crosses in
Scannell - 8.5 Good running and pace and looked like a huge threat
Moussa - 6 Forgot he was on the pitch
Christophe - 6 Didn't do a lot but worked hard
Watt - 6.5 Didn't live up to expectations on his debut, showed glimpses, but not enough
Laurent - 8 Exciting and used pace to be a threat
Spencer - 7.5 Hard working and made a few chances

Paterson - 7 Had a shot and did a lot using his energy when he came on
