Christmas

Does HS know about this?! Perhaps you could do a set at the Christmas party? Save them having to hire entertainment

I might get SZFC to organise a karaoke night now too, with a one off guest appearance by the one and only MtS

Christmas day has never been the same for me since the IV networks stopped showing 70's disaster movies.

I used to love a bit of 'The Towering Inferno' or 'The Poseidon Adventure' after my turkey and Christmas pudding.

Don't forget Noel's Christmas Family Accidents or some other hilarious festive special either!

The famously bad jumpers may have been replaced by equally gaudy shirts but there's nothing festive about 22 people struggling to open a painted archive box!

You should learn how to ceilidh, mate!  Seeing in the new year by whirling around the dance floor is a blast!

Why is new years eve (arguably the biggest party of the year) associated with the Scottish?

I am not one to stereotype but lets face it all your average Scot has to look forwards to is another 365 days of  heroin, Tennants Super and sh!t footbal so what exactly do they have to celebrate?

The answer to your question is that, for many Scots, Hogmanay is a more important (and traditionally Scottish) celebration than Christmas.  I don't know why... but then why do the Spanish celebrate El Dia de los Reyes (*) (January 5th), why do the Dutch celebrate St. Nicholas's Day (5th December, in Holland) etc. etc.

Just one of those things...

Matt

(*I think that's what it's called, although I'm sure Mike can clarify...)

Yes... although I've managed to be doubled booked for this year's HS Carol Concert...

Thank you for the post of the day.  It's early, but nothing is going to beat that for a giggle today

Associating you "as a singer" is just not something I would have ever pictured, absolutely brilliant.  Definitely not sure I will forget that the next time I see you in the spread over Xmas period.  Might ask for a rendition

Oh, you could always do a duet with another one of HS's singers, ask my bro for a rendition of 'Silent Night' if you need another Christmas Carol singer, or away from Christmas his favourite has to be Engelbert Humperdinck 'Please Release Me'.  Am thinking now it must be something about lawyers and singing

That's a bloody good question Matt, and one I have been trying to work out ever since I came here. However, the only response I ever get are 'errr and erm' when I try to find out! Most say they now celebrate Christmas(25th) more than they used to a few years ago and it is becoming more of a tradition. Even the Dutch seem a little unclear what is now 'tradition' surrounding both days though and they haven't made me any less confused by it all either!

Christmas is what you make of it, I am not bothered by shops putting out goods so early as I have never been swayed by it and tend to ignore until I am ready. i think this is key unless you are weak willed I am sure you can all resist the temptation. For me Christmas is spending time with the family and because of that I have come up with a rota that the Parents have to all adhere to. After all we are playing the master card as we have the grandchildren they want to see.

Christmas with kids is just magical, you do not have to spoil your children for them to enjoy it. After all how many presents can 1 child actually play with on Christmas day. Friends of mine seem to buy out Hamelys every year but always comment how Lucy is always content to play with one toy whilst theirs are constantly Discussing. You need to make children appreciate each present and you can not do this if they are smothered with gifts.

I love to cook so to come up with something different but traditional each year is a great challenge and one I love so this is the only part of Christmas that I plan well ahead. I love being in the kitchen on Christmas day especially whilst sipping Champers.

To me Christmas is about giving whether it is present, a meal or a kind gesture. To see people enjoy something I have given is enough reward.

When we had this debate last year, didn't somebody say that as a form of education for their kids, they research how different countries celebrate Christmas each year? Something me & the Mrs will look at doing when our daughter's old enough to appreciate it!

Theological question:

If there is a second coming will we have two Christmases?

It would be convenient to me if it coincided with world cups and European championships.

This sounds really sad but for me the best thing about Christmas is my son's school candlelight carol service. They go to a C of E school and the Church is packed to the rafters with kids, parents, grannies etc. Loads of proper carols, Christmas readings and happy faces.

Makes you think about the true meaning of Christmas and the best thing is that there's no two-bob, Z list celebrities trying to flog junk food, Taiwanese tat etc etc

I don't I saw what happened when people put their money into Arthur Fowlers Christmas Club scheme.
I've steered clear of these type of groups ever since.

Serves them right.

Of course it is... it's because we all love the sound of our own voices.

The story of St. Nicholas - or Sinterklaas as he's known in Holland (and where the rest of us get the name "Santa Claus" from) is that he was famous for giving gifts.  Why  he's famous for giving gifts is something I'm not entirely clear about... but here's some stuff from Wiki:

Sinterklaas
Saint Nicholas

St. Nicholas's day is 6th December - so the Belgians have their celebrations that day, whilst the Dutch give gifts and sweets the evening before on 5th December.

The best thing about the Sinterklaas & Zwarte Piet celebrations is the "pepernoten" - the little cinammon cookies that they cook.  You can get them in big bags along with Schuimpjes - strange sweet thingys (very fake, but quite nice).  The other Dutch "must-have" is a chocolate letter - e.g. in your case, someone would get you a big capital G made of chocolate.

biggrin.gif

Christmas is a religious festival and should be celebrated as such. The current trend of over spending , over drinking , in fact, over indulgence, is truly un christian and is against all the teaching of the religion people are purporting to celebrate.

which is why, as an agnostic, I can take the moral high ground and denounce it as a load of hypocritical bolleaux
