Christmas Telly

Have the adverts for summer holidays started yet ?

The Havens Holiday one was on last night. Same one as last year and the year before. Why dont they show it in a more honest light. Drunken northeners pukeing up over your caravan steps at 2AM and punching each other over your car would be a better advert and more in keeping with the average Havens stay.

Surely the best thing on the box over the Xmas period was An Englishman in New York followed closely by the re-run of Not the 9 o'clock news?

The thing about Doctor who is they didn't very well explain why The Master had all those powers, the idea is the ressurection going wrong tore his body apart meaning the power that a timelord has within was released. The fact these powers took so much energy was why he was hungry. Also the fact it's about a man who is on his 10th incarnation and travels in time in a small wooden box, what kind of realism do people expect?
Gavin and Stacey was very good, this series has been brilliant actually, saw the last episode earlier as a friend has the boxset, which is a good ending to the show.
Didn't actually see many of the christmas programmes as it was my mates 18th christmas day so in the evening we all went to his for a party so even if I did catch any television I wasnt really in the state to watch it properly.
Saw the Catherine Tate Nan special on the I player, she stretched the character of Nan a little too far on that one I reckon, but still good old fashioned christmas tele nonetheless.

Depends if you:

A : Want a bit of light entertainment.

B : You are a pedantic, obsessive science fiction fan that simply has to point out every plot inconsistency in order to highlight your encyclopaedic knowledge of the franchise in question.

What'choo talking about Willis? :madman:

The Day of the Triffids (part one) was reasonable.

I don't think Eddie Izzard makes a very good villain though.

Never does does he , mystery Men such a waster.

Re continuity in any form of fiction, yes you get your ropsessives , but its a sign of a poor writer to make radical changes in their creations without any kind of real explanation (be like Conan Doyle saying Moritarty could change into a shark but he never used it untill he and Holmes fell over the waterfall , its rubbish ).

It basically means the Doctor could have in extreme moments fried baddies and recharged himself on a KFC bargain bucket. RTD is just a poor writer

It's so long since I read the book but the new TV version seems VERY different. Not that I necessarily have a problem with that. I don't remember the Izzard character although I remember the handcuffing(!). The prologue with the harvesting of oil from the triffids seemed a bit naff - the book (like the old TV series which the stars of this version seemed to be intent on rubbishing in the papers) gets straight into the scene in the hospital which is more gripping IMO.

Watched second Doctor Who episode. Better than the first but still silly. Someone on the production team really needs to tell them to turn the music down and tone down some of the hammy performances. The last 10 minutes or so were so self indulgent. Not a wet eye in the house.

Ah, I thought it was superb. I guess that's the last we'll see of Capt Jack, Rose, Martha et al. Tennant's final line of "I don't want to go," had me in bits.

Quality.

Also, the final Gavin & Stacey was absolute class as well, even if it was blatantly obvious what was going to happen.

Yeah totally agree, but I guess RTDavies wanted closure on his characters.

I thought it was largely excellent. Pretty much as above comments say really; a bit drawn out and indulgent last 20 minutes but the 'twist' of the 4 knocks, the sentiment throughout, Dalton & Simm, first 25 minutes and last line were classic TV. I'll miss him terribly, but can't wait to see what Moffat does with it! Hopefully he'll return in a Five Doctors-esque special.

Like the look of the new stuff too, and the sighting of more Blink / Doctor's wife storyline threads:

It's been pretty poor, only stuff I've watched is Royle Family, Gavin and Stacey, the Steve Coogan night on BBC2 last Sunday and The Best Songs of the Noughties (which was rubbish, Snow Patrol Chasing Cars won!). There haven't even been any great films on. But Christmas isn't just about the telly...

Isn't Dr Who for kids ... !?

Kind of? I certainly love it because of the nostalgia I have attached with it. But there are good things about it. It's a mixture of storylines so chances are everyone would find something to like in there (if you like horror for example, check out the amazing 'Blink').

I totally get why people would hate it. I hate some of it myself. But as a character and creation I think it's a superb vehicle and allows for exploring historical themes, adult sci-fi, silly aliens and modern day life.

Not seen much telly. The Victora Wood special was woeful. Day of the Triffids was passable but pretty average. Miranda Harts review of the Year was essentially a long episode of Time Trumpet / Brass Eye but quite good.

Loved the second part of Doctor Who. But best thing I saw was Outnumbered. Great Christmas Special which summed up the whole time of year perfectly.

No, it's for the whole family. That's its appeal. It has been the one programme in recent years that all five of us wanted to watch. Since RT Davies took it over a few years ago it's done that job really well. It has been thoughtful, emotional and gripping. That's why I for one am so disappointed with Davies' farewell storyline which, IMO, has been (uncharacteristiclly) self indulgent toilet.
