Thought we were very unlucky. Back four all were sound against some very physical and mobile strikers. Midfield worked like trojans and our two forwards harried and pressed all match. I like the mobility of the team at the moment, we are trying to play football and not just lumping it up field. Some of our passing moves today were excellent. Unlucky Coquhlan, you had cleared the ball only to see it rebound into the path of the Chesterfield player. Before this match the majority of us would have been happy to take a point off high flying Chesterfield, now I feel sligtly numb about not getting the draw and devastated to have got nothing.

Morris 7
Gilbert 6
Coquhlan 7
Barker 7
Clohessy 6
Soares 6
Grant 8 motm
Simpson 6
Timlin 6
Fairhurst 6
Paterson 7

Subs: pointless 5's

TBV 9 brilliant turn out and in good voice

It was a long trip back to South Norfolk with the image of Simpson's horrible miss at 1-1 so clearly etched on my mind. The player's image on the gallery on Os says it all. We had the chances and paid the price for not gobbling them up. Lincoln Shrimp's post above was spot on. Agree with his usual thoughtful analysis. If he knew that Whittaker went straight down the middle with pens was it unreasonable to expect our coaches to know that too?

Special word about the players who took time out to attend to the lad who caught a rocket in the face at half time. Step forward Hall and Phillips, especially the latter who found a training top to help ease the pain. But we all needed something to ease the pain of that last gasp winner. Oh, and a word for the chap behind us who said on 92 mins that "we have not seen a score draw on our travels". Remember, it aint over until the fat lady sings! And she left her singing so cruelly late yesterday.

Much to be pleased about, however. Onwards and upwards.

Though we had the better chances to win the game, I personally thought they might have edged it overall; though we certainly deserved a point from this game. We were completely overrun in midfield by their bald twins with Grant and Timlin failing to stamp their authority on the game. Also, without Corr to aim at the long ball wasn't really working and we didn't seem able to find an alternative to lumping it forward. That said, Fairhurst looked lively and made some good runs and it was nice to see him get an assist. Grant took his goal well but was otherwise quiet by his standards. Coughlan came in and did a good job against their big man. Not sure it was a corner for their winner, it has to be said.

Morris 6
Gilbert 6
Coughlan 7
Barker 7
Clohessy 5.5 - Didn't get forward as much as I would have liked.
Soares 5.5
Grant 6
Simpson 6
Timlin 5
Fairhurst 6.5
Paterson 4.5 - Struggled to have any impact on the game.

Morris - 5 kicking was poor, dropped an easy catch in the second half.

Clohessy - 7 improving every game i see him play
Barker - 7 played really well only bad thing was missing a decent chance from 8 yards
Coughlan - 7 again another decent display only bad thing was bringing down lester for penalty
Gilbert - 5 not impressed me at all, No better than Herd, Most of there chances came from that side

Simpson - 7 good performance apart from the glorious chance from 6 yards
Grant - 8 took his goal really well
Timlin - 7 Tidy display
Soares - 7 Best ive seen Soares play, probably should have scored 1

Fairhurst - 6 full of running didnt have any chances tho
Paterson - 6 didnt have any big opportunities ran himself into the ground

Subs:
Jarvis - 5 first time ive seen him and looks a bit lightweight
Hall - 6 had a chance to hit it from the edge but decide to take another touch which was disappointing

The Blue Voice - 7

Enjoyed yesterdays game apart from the last minutes, Thought we played really well and definetly deserved something out of the game. There goal came from a corner that shouldnt have been, after the ball clearly come off there player.

When we got back to the station bout 5:30pm we see Paul Sturrock sitting there on his jack waiting for a train so we decided to go and have a chat to him, He looked really disappointed.
We asked him a few questions and he responded nicely to every single one, Sounds like Corr and Sturrock could be out for 3-4 weeks he said Corr would have scared the s**t out of there defence yesterday, He also said he thought that was Soares best performance so far this season.
We said to him we've been really impressed with Josh Simpson and if he would sign permanantly and he said this week he will be trying to get Simpson's loan deal extended to the end of the season.
We asked if he had any money to spend and he said in January he has a little bit to spend, which he said he'd spend on a striker.

Asked him why he wasnt travelling with the team, he responded saying it was his birthday so he was going straight back home to plymouth for weekend.

Morris - 6 Few minor mistakes nothing terrible though.

Clohessy - 7 Like him alot
Barker - 7 Good performance if only he would of scored that sitter
Coughlan - 7 Gave away the penalty but solid otherwise
Gilbert - 6 Herd is just as good

Simpson - 7 Nothing wrong with him today
Grant - 8 Scored, and didn't make any silly challenges
Timlin - 7 Good Performance
Soares - 8 Great Performance, didn't look scared to run at them

Fairhurst - 6 Didn't see him do anything
Paterson - 6 Look lazy in the first 20mins after that didn't pay much attention to him

Subs:
Jarvis - 5 Did not have an impact
Hall - 5 Did not have an impact

The Blue Voice 9, Also good on chesterfield for letting the drum in!

Southend were roared on by more than 500 fans yesterday, great support for league 2!

Didnt go to the game but one theme seems to keep coming up and its one I have noticed too.....Gilbert is not much cop....

To be fair, their right midfielder was quite decent and Soares didn't help out for the first half hour. Gilbert is much better than any left back we had last year.

Interesting point rlb999.
At the Gills game I was reaching the same conclusion as DTS ,but I then started to realise that the Midfield boys weren't giving him enough assistance.
Too little cover - either dragging him out of position or leaving him 1 on 1.

Absolutely gutting. PS seemed close to tears in his interview! But I think you're right lots of positives in this match. Just need to convert our chances into goals! It'll come though lads - keep working hard!

Very disappointing to lose that game. We werent that great for first 20 mins but after that made them look very ordinary.
I like having Coughlan in the defence. Gives me confidence.
Their winner was a freak goal from a corner that never was. The ref was poor I thought. Timlin deserved a booking second half
Lots of teams will lose up there so I can take many plusses out of the performance, and reckon we will be around playoffs at end of season.

Morris - 5 (Didnt have much to do, and what he did he looked uncomfortable with especially kicking)
Gilbert - 5 (Very average full back in my opinion - I barely ever notice him)
Barker - 7 (Had a mad minute where couldn't kick the ball, but was generally commanding)
Coughlan - 8 (Very dominant at the back - great game)
Clohessy - 7 (Quieter than in recent weeks, but up against a good side)
Simpson - 6 (Anonymous in parts, but got in dangerous positions - must improve his finishing)
Grant - 8 (Clever, worked tirelessly and great tidy finish - 9 but for the poor tackle for penalty)
Timlin - 7 (Worked hard but didnt have massive impact on game)
Soares - 8 (Best game for Southend.. very unlucky not to score)
Fairhurst - 7 (Good first half, but tired in second. Technically a good player and did well for the goal)
Paterson - 6 (Worked hard but didnt get much out of the game)

Subs:
Jarvis - 5 (Needs more time on the pitch)
Hall - 5 (Barely saw him)

The Blue Voice -10 (Great atmosphere)

It all comes down to the one thing we really lack --- the PBB. Without a professional big bloke up top we will struggle. Yesterday their tall centre-back won virtually everything in the area without hardly being challenged, a tall, large striker throwing his weight about would have created numerous chances.

If only you were 'professional' you might fit the bill ;)

As someone has mentioned it, I had a quick chat with PS after the London trains had departed too. He was lamenting not having Corr available, thinking he would have got the better of their back line, as has been mentioned in this thread.

He was also quite downbeat with regards to his substitutions, in wishing he had brought Prosser on up front to cause some chaos/confusion. PS also felt having another big man in the box at the end, we might have cleared that corner.

Positive to hear him say that you have to give the youngsters a go to show what they can do, even if it may have backfired this time!

spireite in peace!

Evening all....I just wanted to congratulate u guys on your performance yesterday. From the teams we've played so far at the B2net i would say your lads deseved at least a point and were one of if not the best team we've faced so far.Don't beat yourselves up over this one,as someone else pointed out with teams that are 'flying' they often get that little extra luck when they need it.I think you'll be there or thereabouts come may, PS is a good manager.Great follwing from you guys aswell(protesters or not) good luck for the rest of the season.

Cheers mate, good to have sensible guys on here posting positive messages, rather than some of the idiots from other clubs who appear now and again. Incidently, 4 years ago after we had played at Leeds we stayed overnight in Chesterfield. Never seen so many fit birds roaming around during the evening!. Every pub and night club was packed. Is that a regular occurance?.

Smiffy, I've been collecting the indexes since they started. Has there been an updated one following the Barnet game?

Thanks
