Channel 4 at 25

Glad this thread is going down so well!

Other comedy gems I remember over the years on C4.

Vic & Bob in The Weekenders (a pilot for a sitcom but it was too surreal even for C4)

Rude Health
Drop The Dead Donkey
Who Dares Wins
Absolutely

And going way way back, The Kit Curran Radio Show

Who Dares Wins

This was fantastic - and Julia Hills would have got it.

I think Channel 4 should be credited for reviving the British Film industry. Albeit, as stated elsewhere many of these were art-house films directed by the likes of Derek Jarman and Peter Greenaway (all with plenty of nudey women. Julia Ormond completely naked and covered in blood in The Baby of Macon springs to mind (and groin)).

Channel 4 news is my news programme of choice, and is well presented by Jon Snow.

Worst of Channel 4, for me, is Countdown. Two boffin types coming up with 7 letter words from the selection Z X W T E M J P O, only to be usurped by some **** like Richard Stilgoe or Martin Jarvis saying "I got an 8 letter word." Bull$hit! They must have a little computer they put the letters in that come up with a word.

Surely the letters they'd have needed for that would be L T U L I $ B H?

I might be wrong, but didn't she wap them out late one Saturday night? Probably the first naked pair of breasts I ever saw on telly. She's had (relatively) the least successful career of the 5. Tony Robinson (Blackadder & TimeTeam), Rory McGrath (various gameshows & things on discovery Channel), Philip Pope (composer of pretty much any decent music for comedies in past 25 years as well as part of the genius that was KYTV, Jimmy Mulville (top TV exec & owns most of Hat Trick productions)

I remember that one too vaguely in terms of the mists of teenage hormones.

Very possibly, although the wordy girl who sits with the "celebs" on there just now has got a bit of a Yummy Mummy thing going on. I'd certainly like to see her take 2 from the top & 1 from the bottom with Ms Vorderman!!! :p

A bloke from work was on Countdown once. The conundrum was 'AWAKENING', but he says all he could think of was 'W*NKING' so didn't get it.

I remember seeing some Scottish oil rig worker on there once coming up with the word W*NKERS. His opponent, a posh bloke also had the same word and said "it's a pair of W*NKERS. Whiteley's face was a picture, and I think it was what killed him in the end.

:hilarious:

But, was 'W*NKERS' in the dictionary and therefore allowable?!?

forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but weren't C4 responsible for 'Withnail & I'?

That can't go without a mention.

Withnail was made by George Harrison's Handmade Films. Not sure if there's an official link between Handmade and C4 or not.
