Broadband Tax

Davros

The Whippet
Another nice tax from the government.

Why the f**k should i have to pay for other people to have broadband? i already work hard and pay for mine, i dont give two hoots if someone else cant afford it, maybe they shouldnt have it if they cant.

broadband is NOT a nessecity!

What next, im gonna have to pay a tax on my next flat screen TV so all the pikeys can have a free one?

even worse is that everyone who has a line will be made to pay this tax, but they estimate that they will only be able to get the super-fast services they are proposing to between 40-50% of the population!

So you might end up paying the tax, but recieving absolutely no benefit!

I'll be interested to see where and when this has actually been passed by parliament just to assure myself that nobody is knee-jerking to a press report.

WTF is the government doing getting involved in broad band.. the private sector will do 5 times a better job of updating the network as its needed for 1/5 the cost.. I saw this debate on T.V. yesterday and some lackey piped up saying the Government has to be involved in building big infra struture projects, just like the railways.. Well taking aside the phyiscal scale of the two things the Railways were built and run privatly

Does anyone know if Jacqui Smith's husband was involved in this initiative?

Actually I support the idea. The digital divide means that a lot of elderly people dont get access to Broadband, which would make life easier for them. As it happens, by increasing access, we can do electronic voting, more choice of entertainment, and so on.

Given that I haven't had to pay for a TV License (and legally so) since getting high speed broadband, I can probably stomach £0.50 a month on my phone bill to help others reach the same situation.

its not the amount of the tax, but the principle

also, while on the agenda, the idea has also been muted at giving some of the TV licence money to ITV....

Again, a decent idea, as the proposal is it's used for regional news programming.

Its the amount and the principle with me!

Sooner we get adverts on BBC the better. The BBC should be privatised and the licence fee abolished! That way the Beeb might be a bit more frugal with its budgets rather than spunking so much to to$sers like Ross, Norton, Wogan, Moyles, Brand and Kaplinsky etc

Not on your nelly. I barely watch any other telly but the Beeb, and certainly don't listen to commercial radio stations. More than happy to pay my licence fee if it means keeping flupping Cilit Bang adverts off Radios 2/5/6

Im in a quandry over the Beeb.

Certainly the content and lack of adverts make it a better viewing medium (in general) than its fellow UK counterparts, hence why its programmes are the worlds biggest TV export outside of the USA, and in that respect, i think we do need a national broadcaster.

What it does need however is far tighter regulation, and a reduction in the fee. Paying the likes of Ross or Norton, however good they supposedly are £18m odd is ridculous, and in a public company cannot be justified.

In terms of programme making, especially in the fields of nature programmes, the beeb is miles ahead, but sadly in terms of its corporate structure and management, it is in the stone ages.

You acknowledge that broadband is not a necessity but then you talk about HAVING to pay. You know you can choose to go without it if you dislike the taxation principle, right?

No, i dont mind paying for MY broadband that i use, and yes, i dont see it as a necessity, more a luxury item that i choose to have because i WANt it,... what i object to is paying for other peoples broadband because the government have obviously decided it is no longer a luxury item... in which case they should reduce the VAT to 5% like with Gas and electric. But obviosuly, unlike gas and electric its not a neccisity... in which case im going round in cirlce, but i think you see my point. (ie its either one or the other, but if the Gvmt want to see it as both to tax the f**k out of you)

It's a pi$$ take. As someone said it's 50p a month, even if it was 1p a month I would still refuse to pay it. Next we'll be paying for people's shopping as they don't have any money.
