Ref Watch .... Bristol Rovers

Refereeing games in todays professional football is a frankly an impossible task. The authorities have got to understand that referees need as much help as possible and yes shock, horror, that means, tv replays, every major sport has now embraced this to the benefit of the sport, football appears to think differently.
I'm always amused when people say referring decisions would slow the game down. Nothing slows the game down more than injured players having to leave the field of play, sometimes taking a minute or more to get off the pitch.
Southend would I'm sure be a least 6 points better off with the benefit of a tv referee.

Whilst I am not sure about the 6 points, I agree that referees need more assistance. If that involves video replays in certain instances, so be it.

The argument has always been two fold.

a. it slows the game down. It will do, but at least it takes the controversy out of it

b. it becomes a different game to that played on the parks. Well it is already, isn't it.

FIFA (and it is a FIFA decision) really have to act.

I've reffed people who have played for 35 years and don't have a Scooby about the Laws of the Game.

Anyway....

Just to spice this up a bit. I know Mick, and he is a very, very good referee. But to just to show how difficult this is, I thought the goal should have stood when it happened. This from the perfect view I didn't have from the Easte Greens :)

Having seen it since, I don't think the goal should have stood. I think Mildy had his hands around the ball and had it under control.

So that is two fairly decent referees who have two completely contrary views on the goal. Football is a game of opinion after all, and sometimes the opinion of a certain referee on a certain day is crucial.

Cheated? Nope. Unlucky? Yes.

Thank you, Kerry.

You've come back to that important issue. Control and where his hands were. I've based my defence on the eyewitness assertion that he had both hands on top of the ball. If that were not the case and he did have his hands around the ball, then an indirect free-kick would be the correct course of action as per my earlier post:

Yes. Hands round the ball so the only way it could be played would be by kicking the keepers hands, freekick; hands on top of ball giving opponents boot clear unobstucted access to ball, fine.

video replays are just another controversy - even when they paly then 100 times you cannot always tell whats gone on -

at League One level we get the useless ***** who have jumped thru the hoops but haven't got a clue - if they had a bit of a clue they would be getting it wrong at a higher level -

games are regularly affected by refs being uselss - and we seem to be suffering really badly at the moment - partly because we have young players (Barney excepted) who don't know how to paly the ref -

Dougies tumble for the free kick against Saints was just knowing the game and the refs - like the OLdham pen etc etc etc ....

we are consistently mugged by refs buying old lags pro tricks -

i actually thgink the bRoots Hall crowd amke it too easy for visiting officials always hoping against hope they might get a ref who knows whats what..

hey ho - will the ref sppoil tomorrows game ? probably -

worst decisions I have ever seen ..... example Matt Harrold getting sent off against Yeovil - aand he was then playing out of his skin for a future at SUFC = he got a broken nose and the end of his career at his carreer at his home town team.... what the men in black get wrong affects SUFC and individuals player pay a hiogh price for....

I think it would really improve things if they had at l;east played the game at even sunday morning level

the Leeds players worked the ref non stop - from the first minute onwards non stop .... (somethings never change) - cos they know it can win them the game - we are sort of naive .... I actually prefer my team like that

In our last game it would have taken a tv replay ref about 10 seconds to decide that the ball was indeed kicked out of Mildenhalls hands.Game held up for less time than it takes to move a free kick 2 feet to the left that some referees insist on, Justice is done. Football is an arrogant sport,Rugby,Tennis and Cricket have embraced this technology and have become better sports because of it.

Exactly how I see it - would take away all the wasted time on remonstrations as well.

What about the ref for today?? Is he any good?

Lost the plot with all the moaning about how crap the ref from the southampton game was..... like we didnt already know!!

So, will we get a decent referee this week that let's the game flow and allows the advantage to be played or will we get the same old crap we're used to?

What about the ref for today??
Very average. Only on the league list because he's young I presume.
Very inconsistent decision making including several times where his lack of advantage allowed cost The Pirates when virtually clean through (like I care though).
Strange wielding of cards, then ignoring worse offences e.g. Rovers left back.

But he did the proper bits that an assessor will look for i.e. hand actions & whistle tone. So probably a 9.

From the referee's perspective, he was poor to average.

Too many times he allowed himself to be crowded by players.

Didn't let the game flow, on two occassions he stopped Bristol taking a quick free kick for no good reason. You could tell the frustration. A bit whistle happy throughout and missed some good chances to play advantage.

He was inconsistent. If you are going to insist free kicks need to be taken from the exact blade of grass, do it all game, not just for a bit of it.

The two yellow cards after their goal were needless and pointless.

He hung his assistant on the East Side out like a kipper in the first half. Lino gives Rovers a throw, we all shout, he looks up and then gives it to us. It looked poor and that's basic communication.

That said, he did not appear to get too many decisions wrong, which is a plus.

I thought todays ref was one of the all round poorest I have seen here. Nothing too controversial - just lots of incorrect decisions for both teams

Surely we should have had a penalty.. I couldnt believe it wasnt given

I wasn't at all happy with the way he kept allowing their captain to shout in his face at every decision, and bloody Aaron LEscott should have been off the pitch!

Exactly, and then he booked Dougie and Barney for dissent
