Bradders 3 million

Yet another person who seems to think the only thing to playing up front is scoring goals......

Being able to win the ball and hold the ball up is an important quality in a frontman, and out of all our strikers Bradbury is not just the only one who is any good at it, but the only one who seems to be able to do it at all.

I cant believe theres people who dont realise the part he plays. Read Flahavan's interview where he acknowledges the contribution....

Or the interview with JCR from the other week. The players love having him upfront and so does Tilly.

He is good at what he does, holding the ball up, bringing in other players with glancing headers for JCRs 2nd goal the other week. Granted I'm sure that he would have wanted to chip in with a few more goals than he has but he is a better foil for freddy than harold and paytner. Which I got shot down for saying over the summer if I remember rightly!!!

People post lots of negative comments on thisguys because he doesn't score alot of goals, but as stated there is more toa striker than just goals something. I am certainly glad that Goater retired when he did because I feel that we would have seen more of his performances against Brentwood away than Col******r at home and would have got an absoluting slating on this board like so many other strikers this season!

He wins more headers than any of our other attacking players and he retains possession better than any of our other attacking players. He can't shoot for toffee (other than yesterday, obviously), but that shouldn't detract from all the plusses he brings to the side.
Definitely no coincidence.

Personally for me, he is the Goater replacement. Personally, I think that's the one player from last season we haven't replaced. Goater did all of that, but scored too. If Bradbury can find his confidence after that goal yesterday then goals from both of our strikers will be the difference in the Championship or League One next season...

How many league matches have we won this season without Bradbury in the side?
none

and just lately you think hes the worst starting forward and freddy has been fantastic banging them in from all over the park?

at least bradbury turns up for the games and isnt dreaming of bigger things quality player and quality goal at cardiff.

Bradbury is certainly the best of the strikers we have to partner Eastwood, he holds the ball up well and wins most flick ons which unfortunatley Freddie dosent pick up at the moment (he is playing way to far back). Any views on playing Bradbury and Harrold up front with Freddie just behind? Onbviously leaves us exposed in midfield.

you answered it.

433 wouldn't work with freddy just behind, we all remember his wondergoals but the majority of his (best) chances come from him breaking through into space behind the defenders due to someone like bradders dragging a player out of postition. 433 would only work IMO with paynter or maybe bradders sitting deep and playing as an advanced midfielder... no matter how good we think freddy is his best role is definitely as far up the pitch as possible

Totally agree with that.

I don't think Bradburry is great but he is certainly the best of the lot we have.

His link up play is good, it's not in the same league as the Goats mind. The Goat's play last season when he would receive the ball in to his chest, thigh, feet and play in a midfielder to release Freddie or a.n.other was Outstanding. I think he has been the biggest loss to our team this year. Not only was his link up play great but he chipped in with goals like a striker should. we are ot talking Drewe or Tes 1 in 5 but 1 in 3(ish).

Every other striker we have had to fill the 'Target man' job has been just about able to half do the Target man job and score 1 in 10 goals a season. Goater did the target man and got the goals.

Hopefully Brads will gain confidence from his goal and add some more goals to his good link up play. He will than just about be half as good as the Goat. Which as I said at the beginning makes him our best partner for Fred.

Spot on, we are missing the Goat in a big way, for all the reasons you mention in your post. I heard a number of people last year moan that he was slow, we didnt pay him to be quick we payed him to hold the ball up and bring others into space. The fact he chipped in with goals was a bonus. Not to mention his influence off the pitch. Key thing about Bradbury (not in same class as goat) and Goater, is they are both bright chaps who think about the game, I like Harrold and Paynter but they dont have that quality and at this point in our season thats what we need. We are moving back up, CMON THE SHRIMPERS!

Most of Freddys goals now come from 18-20 yards, which whilst they are all great goals is annoying as he seems to have forgotten to score inside the penalty area or from one on ones...

Behind two main strikers would actually suit Freddy, he prefers to drop off deep, not play on the shoulders of the defenders. If you watch him he always sits back and lets the other striker drag the centrebacks back a bit so he can make use of the space between midfield and defence.

I agree that 433 isnt a great formation though, we dont have the strikers to play up front in that position, and as soon as you go 4-3-3 you end up with hoof ball bypassing the place where Freddy would be....

Quote[/b] (pboreham @ Jan. 14 2007,12:56)]Yea, he scored a shed-load of goals for Pompey over a couple of seasons (in the second div as was then) and I think it was Brian Horton that splashed the cash.

Dont think he ever did it in the Prem though...
He had only scored 15 league goals for Pompey when Man City signed him for £3million.
He actually did ok'ish in the premiership if you look at his goals, Nearly a 1:3 rattio

www.soccerbase.com :

Man City 30-07-1997 29-10-1998 £ 3000000 34 (6) 10

Decent goal rate for Pompey as well :

Portsmouth 13-10-1999 25-03-2004 £ 300000 90 (9) 28
Portsmouth 14-08-1995 30-07-1997 Free 41 (13) 15

Not quite as prolific for us
