The older lads in the CS Crew from the 90s and early 00s always was in contact with a fella from Colchester called peg leg

Always made me giggle with the Southend lads saying we got Col ewes peg leg on the case for the met up

Was his name Jake by any chance? with a dodgy beard and an Australian accent?... I think I heard about him, when he wasnt at the football, he used to "hang out" at Colchester hospital looking after the little local ones?

Always looked foreward to the "worzel" games, away, we always took the whole town over,as well as the ground. Was never affraid there, but loved the town(old buildings, castle etc) and i always thought, know, they had better beers than we had...East Anglia had some good bitters, spoilt for choice.
The 74 game ,i think,i caused a bit of a "stink",in the layer rd end, they got a "pen",so it all kicked off..as a few policeman dragged me over the wall,Simmo tried to help,he got nicked as well.By the time the "meatwaggon" left the ground,10 mins later,it was full of Southend fans...the Leigh Comm lads ,came & picked up Simmo & took me home as well in their cars.
I think i stll have the paper cutting, somewhere, from the Daily Mirror ,about ref gives pen, which causes big trouble in the ground.
But i do like Colchester as a town, better than Sarfend...but not as good as old Leigh...ok,there castle still stands, unlike ours at Hadleigh

Did you know that so called leader Abdul .

No Os, but i thought the Col Utd leader was called Worzel Gummidge...i cant read and i cant write but that dont really matter ..i come down from Colchester town and i can drive a tractor.
Sorry Colchester And proud

We have some great real ale places in Colchester now, try The Odd One Out or The Victoria Inn in North Station road, some of the Col U fans go there before the games, they have both won lots of CAMRA awards.

Remember in either 1970 or 71, Sat afternoon game there, and one of the wooden barriers broke when we were doing a Knees up Mother Brown number. could have been serious injuries, but dont recall anyone badly hurt.
Also in 74, a Friday night game. About 25-30 of us (ex Leigh Comm) met at Rayleigh Weir and went there in a convoy of cars. Weather was atrocious with rain, and the game was called off pre kick off.
We decided to stay there for a couple of hours to have a beer, and settled down in a Pub in the Town centre. After an hour or so, someone came in, and said the local 'herberts' backed up with some of the 'action men' (squaddies) stationed there, were en route to give us a 'kicking'.
We saw them marching towards the pub, went outside and TJ led the charge, although we were well outnumbered.
They all scattered, including the squaddies, and Old Bill appeared to usher us back in the pub, where we stayed trouble free until we left town.
Think the game was re-dated on either a Mon or Tues night, and we had a massive crew up there. Not sure if that was the season, or the following one, when returning on the Train, some intelligent individuals decided to light a fire in one of the train carriages.
Result being it stopped at Rayleigh, and everyone was turfed off.

That had to be 71 when the barrier broke , as for 74 that had rained all day long when it was called off , I flew of to Spain the following day with my wife for 2 weeks holiday so missed the replay .

I was standing behind the barrier when the barrier broke in 71.it was my first away game. We passed the barrier over the heads of the supporters in front then sang "layer road is falling down, build it up with blue and white" fortunately no one was hurt.

I remember the 74 game as it was my first away match. It seemed to me as if there were only away fans there as I think we had lads in both ends and part of one side.

The old railway sleepers in the Layer Road end gave cause for concern as we had a lively Knees Up Mother Brown going on and they were flexing so much I thought they'd snap. I remember also watching some young idiots trying to set light to the rubbish under the stand by dropping lit pieces of paper down between the sleepers. I pointed out to them that if they did manage to start a fire it would probably send the whole place up in flames but that didn't stop them.

To think that the ground was largely unchanged when we last visited it (2007 or 2008?); bendy sleepers and all!

Remember fans trying to set fire to the steps, people collecting old paper...but i think we / they tried that every time we were at Layer Rd.

The wooden terracing was replaced many years before 2007-2008 season, we had also covered the other end which was open terrace to seats not that there were many of them!
