Post-Match Thread and Ratings Blues (Purples) 3 - 0 Warsaw

Well, what a difference a win makes. We have been putting in performances and not getting our rewards, like the Norwich and Charlton matches, and I'd have taken a dire performance an a lucky 1-0 win, but last night was excellent.

Walsall, it should be said, where dire. That "performance" was, quite frankly, a joke. Once they went down to 10 men, it was a disgusting performance from them. Their keeper made a couple of saves, and Troy Deeney upfront looked to have something about him, but apart from that I'd be livid if I was a Walsall fan. Easily the worst performance at Roots Hall from any team that I can remember.

Sending off was the right decision. Was a shocker of a challenge on Grant, and could have easily broke his leg.

A big well done to Ricky Duncan as well for last night. At the end of the match we had 4 players out there who have come through the youth team, and Bentley on the bench. That is why money is spent on youth set ups. Moussa, Herd, O'Keefe and Crawford should all be saying a big thank you to Duncan.

We played some lovely stuff at times last night, and them being down to 10 men certainly helped. Once we went 2-0 up, you could see the confidence returning to the side. Herd, Francis, Baldwin, Sankofa and Mildenhall all looked to pass it out from the back, and Grant and Macca where dropping deep to pick the ball up. Everyone wanted to be involved last night, and I think of the 3rd goal nearly everyone had touched the ball. Players where taking a touch, when previously they'd hook it over their shoulders. They looked to beat players rather than passing the buck. It was a joy to watch.

Onto the players:

Mildenhall - Won't have a quieter game all season. No chance with the free kick that hit the bar. His catching, and distribution was good as well.

Francis - Some superb deliveries in the second half, topped off with the assist for Moussa. I thought he'd be in for a tough game against Julian Gray, but was sound defensively.

Sankofa - I'm always worried about him starting at centre back because of his size, but he has a terrific leap. Hardly lost anything in the air, and should have scored from a free header in the second half. I think Barrett will come back in, but it will be harsh on Sankofa. That is why he is in the squad.

Baldwin - He is excellent isn't he? A real leader on the pitch and must of headed the ball close to 50 times. Don't think he lost one. Should of had a shoot when he broke out from the back but looked to play in Crawford whose touch let him down.

Herd - That long throw is such a weapon, it lead to the first goal. He wasn't really tested defensively, but got forward well as well. Links well with Moussa out on the left. I'm a fan.

Scannell - Devestated his season is over because he was in for a shout of player of the season. Next to me is a Scannell hater, and next to him is a Scannell hater. Both gave him a standing ovation and both said its a blow to lose him, I hope it isn't serious. That tells you all you need to know. Hope he has done enough for a new deal.

Macca - Some fantastic passes, mixed in with some bad ones. He also made a drive into the box with the ball which I haven't seen from him for a long time. He was constantly putting other players under pressure as well.

Grant - My man of the match. He didn't put a foot wrong all game. He didn't waste a pass, didn't miss a tackle, and almost ended up with a goal with a fantastic run into the box and shot across goal. The work rate was spot on as well, even at 3-0 he was chasing the ball down when it was going out for our throw. Excellent, excellent performance.

Moussa - Fantastic performance and I can see why he got the man of the match, even though I disagreed with it. His first goal was excellent technique. I think most of our players would have put that over the North Bank, but he found the bottom corner. Could have easily had a hattrick tonight but 2 goals and an assist isn't a bad return for a wide player. Cost me two curries though so losses a mark.

Vernon - I'm not a fan. On Saturday he was dire. He was better against Walsall last night. Won his share in the air, and looked to link up with Spencer. Felt Paterson was harshly dropped, when it should have been Vernon, but he did well. Should have scored. His experience certainly helped Spencer and Crawford when he came on.

Spencer - Haven't been overly impressed with him before tonight but his energy levels where spot on. Never stopped working and scored a decent header. Should of scored more, and wasted the ball a couple of times when in possesion but he is still young and still finding his feet. I'd be tempted with a new deal BUT not as a main striker.

Subs:

O'Keefe - Knocked the ball around well, but wasn't overly involved. Great first touch at one stage bringing the ball down.

Crawford - Nice to see him get his debut. Bad first touch from Baldwin's pass, but looked full of running.

Was a really good team performance were we just went for it and got our rewards.

I really hope that Tilly has faith in a winning side and barr Scannell who is now injured i hope he keeps that same team.

Personally i think we will see Barrett come straight back in which will be a shame as Osei took his chance in the team really well and had a great game.

Mildy : 7 had nothing to do but watch a free kick cannon back of the bar.

Herd: 7 He is our player and really decent little player. He should be starting over malone every week. He is more intelligent than malone and attacking wise he is much more of a threat. With some match experience and maybe some gym time he will be a really great player defensively aswell.

Baldwin: 8 For me he exaclty what this club needs. He is strong agressive and leads by example . He won near enough everything against his marker ands does every game. If col u dont want him then we should try to sign pat as soon as.

Sankofa: 7 I have never been osei's biggest fan, but he had a really great game the other night. He looked comfortable and really keen and athletic . Although Barrett is captain i feel that he should be kept out of the team for now. Players should be able to force the way into the team with good performances.

Francis: 8 Technically the best player we have at the club. Confidence is a major issue with simon. He is barr none the best crosser of the ball we have in the team dair i say it the division. Defensively he has to really be at the top of his game to cope , but he is so great going foward and the cross for mousse at the end was premier league.

Moussa: 8 Great game. Fully of energy confidence and skill. Great goals and his passing tracking and running were a joy to watch.

Grant: 8 According to JCF he will play premier league again one day, then this boy can go all the way. He was at the heart of everything today . He tackled he tracked and frustrated the opposition and then drove on and looked to exploit space with his energy and great passing. We will struggle to hang on to him if he performs like that very often.

Macca: 6 He still looks like a wasp just buzzing all over. He needs to channell all his energy into consistantly finding his team mates. Half his passes go astray and tonight one awful pass nearly cost us a goal. Come on macca your better than that.

Scannell: 7.5 How times change. A few weeks ago he was being booed jeered and now he gets standing ovations. You have the quality pace and power to be a real crowd pleaser damian. Beleive in yourself and play with the freedom you have of late and non league will always be a distant memory. Sign him up for next year tilly.

Vernon: 6.5 Looks lost at times. He has strength and his hold up play is decent but as strikers go he is as limp as a pensioners 3rd leg. Pattison to be tried with spencer please tilly.

Spencer: 7 Hunger hunger hunger. The boy has had a rough ride and hasnt had the breaks he deserves. Well has 3 goals to his name already and looks a really good prospect. He got a goal but had to work his nuts of for it and show quality to finish it. Sign him up give him a pre-season and i reckon we might just get a decent return of goals from him.

O'keef: 7 Did himself no harm. Looked positive and busy and retained the ball really well. May get a chance with scannell out of the team.

Crawford: 6 Came on and looked lively got hismelf in a great position only for a touch to let him down. More than likely nerves and a rush of adrenalin , but im sure he will get a few more minutes between now and the end of the season.

TBV 7 Started off really loudly but as it became apparent that the boys would win the noise dropped off slightly. Still a great effort and nice to see the east and south getting invloved.

Ref: 8 See we dont always get **** refs.

Question: What was the average age of our team? Must be one of the youngest teams we have ever fielded. The future is not so bleak after all.

you talking about the un marked header in the penalty area my gran would have scored all he had to do was keep it down

your gran would not have made the ten yard run to ensure she was un marked and in the right place at the right time ! But yes maybe I am being a bit generous becasue it was 'Sankofa'.

Couldn't agree more. I just hope talks about a new contract for him are either ongoing or planned for the very near future.
