Blimey

I've been through the proposal now and it is even worse than I thought. Merkozy have decided to use the Eurozone for a re-run of 1930s economic policy.

It can't be long for the next crisis to hit in the New Year, especially with Italy having so much debt to rollover in the spring. If I had any Euro assets I'd start thinking about how to reduce the exposure.

Before the summer,I helped a couple of final year economics students prepare a report and presentation comparing the 29 crash with the current situation and this is pretty much the conclusion they reached too.
For an interesting take on this, check out Paul Mason's blog: "Thinking outside the 1930's box" http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15217615

Did you agree with that conclusion as well?

There are obvious similarities and differences(as Paul Mason points out in his blog). We know that recovery from the 29 crash didn't start until a)countries left the gold standard b)Governments in the US and Europe started massive public works programmes.Interestingly, the countries that left the gold standard first, were the quickest to recover.
Does this mean that the Eurozone countries should abandon the Euro?(Personally,I hope not, for political as much as economic reasons). The comparisons with today, also need to factor in(somehow)the effects of globalisation, which is of course so much higher now, than it was back in the 30's.
What worries me(and I believe yourself) is that there is no serious plan for growth on the table, either in the US or in Europe. After all,we know that austerity measures alone, don't lead directly to growth.
Seems like even that nice Cristine Lagarde agrees with me too.:winking:
