I'd not seen that FT piece. It's really good. And again makes the claim that contrary to what has been stated as fact on here we had an upper-midtable wagebill this season.

Goes to show how lucky we've been with the last two managerial appointments.

Also see this article in the FT re. the best British managers of all time utilising said statistical method developed by Stefan Szymanski - which has a healthy section dedicated to Luggy - it also, interestingly has Stevie Tilson listed as the 10th best manager of all time! Eye-opening read.

Quote from the article
Sturrock says: “Tara is a hoof-ball merchant.” Just before the match, Brady says: “Me and Paul disagree on a number of things. We disagree on who should play up front today.” Yet they have built an alliance. At Southend, Sturrock is overachieving again. The club’s annual revenues are £3.2m. Brady says, “We’ve the ninth highest wage bill. We should finish ninth, right?” In fact, going into the match against Bradford, Southend are second in League Two.

Is it over the top? is it rubbish? Slightly surprising?

Regardless of the arguments about hoofing it over the top, direct football, or reminiscing over the Messi and Fabregas like forward play (I obviously underestimated the skill and touch of Wayne Gray and Leon Constantine) former managers encouraged, the achievements over the last two season have been remarkable.

Arrival and four players on the books. One full and a couple of weeks pre-season, to finish mid table and come heartbreakingly close top promotion the next year? Mr Sturrock has my thanks and gratitude for two amazing seasons.

Dull football? Seriously, are memories that short that we've forgotten the seasons under Martin and Little?

If anything we've drastically over achieved this season with a team of cloggers. Watching the Crewe kids, Cheltenham and Swindon shows up the lack of class in our playing squad in my (deluded, rose tinted, whatever) mind, and these dull tactics have kept us in contention as opposed to hindered.

Boring and effective? Yes. in answer to the three questions I posed? No.

I'm bored like the the rest of you, but **** it, lets go 4-3-3 and stick Sussex up the middle.

And great link Pubey.

:loyalsupporter:

I'm sure I've seen that link on here before, maybe around the time of that Bradford game, anyway, it just adds more fuel to the fire against the mutterings of those saying Sturrock should go.

It suggests that Martin Allen might be a good choice if we can't get the stand out choice, Steve Tilson, back.

Failing that I believe John Beck is available after walking out on Histon; even Ronnie Moore scores more highly than our man.

cheers, very interesting

Yeah, what happened in that Bradford home game? We lost 0-1.What happened after we were briefly top of the league? Yeah, we got 83 points but didn't go up automatically or get to Wembley. What league are we playing in next season? League 2.Where were we when Sturrock took over? Oh yes,League two.Plus ça change and all that.
Pity the FT weren't around to hear the "Top of the League and you ****ed it up" chant.

But it's lucky for you we never went up otherwise you'd have nothing to post about would you !

Oh,I dunno.I thought the ticket allocation for the Cardiff Finals was pretty poor.Doubt if Wembley would have been much better.:winking:

It was an opinion, expressed as a joke. And I'm not whinging. You're as entitled to your opinion,as I am to mine.

What was the opinion? That the only reason a journalist would have a positive word to say about Sturrock was because they are friends? And your evidence for this is that the guy was Northern correspondant. Where is the joke there?

Did you have a sense of humour by-pass when you moved to Dublin?:winking:

(Deconstructing humour is incredibly difficult to do even for professional comedians. If you haven't seen it, I recommend you get a copy of John Cleese's Alimony Tour on DVD.Very funny and educational too).:smiles:
