Nice to see that impartial viewers can see what so many "fans" can't. Though they could have checked their facts there, the notorious Aldershite game was, of course, December and not February. Probably agree with all their "awards" there.

 Lol, snap Harry!

Blimey. I'm a fan of Luggy but that it surprising.

Mistake in the article re the Aldershot fiasco too.

Well done to Sturrock, although I'm always worried when awards seem to be given mainly on the basis of illness or affliction. What Sturrock has achieved as a person battling with Parkinsons is very impressive, however I'm sure he'd want people to put it to one side.

Sorry, not impressed. Factually inaccurate not just on the chronology. The impediments at next to no money Southend ? Two years on a decent budget (compared to most of the rest), a clean start - no baggage and decent support home and away.

He has my admiration for coping with his condition but I don't think he himself would want to be rated "best manager" on the back of his affliction.

And as for putting Mancini ahead of Martinez and Lambert, well I suppose he does wield a mean cheque book.

I took it to be "in spite of" not "because of" or "on the back of". Got to be honest, I only noted the winners in each category, not the rest so hadn't noticed Mancini...agreed Martinez and Lambert (and di Matteo!) all did far better.

'Next to no money' Southend yet we forked out decent money for Harris, Martin, Benyon, Timlin. Not doubting his achievements but we have one of the biggest budgets in League 2. Top 6 was a minimum requirement.

This forum is great if your face doesn't fit with some posters !

If we had had exactly the same season we have just had, and it had been under Tilson, then this thread would have been I suspect with comments such as "well deserved" , "legend" etc etc if the independent had awarded Tilly the same accolade !!

Now of course this is no slight on Tilson - as he will always remain a legend of mine, both as player and manager - but I do feel that sometimes there is a lot of contradiction on here when it comes to the comparisons of the past .

Again, I'm not a Sturrock love child - but I do think that his main downfall for some is that he doesn't warm himself to the fans, whereas I actually like his honesty.

Hammers fans have bored me this week with their dislike for big Sam - however, west ham needed to get out of the division and Sam did this, with football that wasn't liked, but it was affective.

I'm sorta of wandering all over the place with this thread, but I feel he forum is currently with so much pointing, blaming, finger pointing. Personally, I want Southend promoted. Do I want to be entertained, in an ideal world yes, but I would take success first. I hope Sturrock gets to finish the job he started. Stability is key. First season survival and confidence back in the football world was achieved, this season just short, next season I firmly believe that we will have a successful season with PS, it may no.t be pretty, but I can't compromise for the sake of the club.

I'm not sure about manager of the year, but definately of the last 2 years. As TTS alluded to, if we hadn't sacked Tilly and he'd turned us round from a squad of 4 to within a whisker of automatic promotion in 2 years, people would be calling him the reincarnation of christ.

I'm not sure the relevance of Steve Tilson to this particular thread. Tilson was a decent manager, with a few flaws, who actually won stuff. Yes he also presided over relegation and if Ian McHerbert wants to talk about impediments and next to no money perhaps he should look closely at the second half of 2009/10.

It's not a question of the face not fitting, more the ludicrous hyperbole attached to a suggestion that Sturrock was the best manager for 2011/12. Twenty managers have been more successful than him and I suspect as many again have produced more entertaining football. As I said earlier I admire the way his has coped with his condition, but, that aside, there is no objective way that he could be viewed "best manager".

Considering that many people that suffered with Parkinson Disease would probably retire from working Sturrock has done a sterling job. I have not agreed with some of his decisions but can only admire him for overcoming his illness in such a manner as to throw himself into what is a stressful job.

Good to see some credit going his way despite the inaccuracies surrounding the Aldershot fiasco!!

Paul Sturrock may not be the best manager in the country or even the best ever Southend manager but he is a decent man doing a good job. Lots of people get awards they don't deserve, usually Premiership managers with big budgets. I'm pleased for Luggy that he's got the award and I'm pleased for Southend that we get a bit of the reflected glory. It's an added bonus that it gets up the nose of the bitter old men on here. Steve Tilson will always be a hero to me but he has gone and won't be coming back. Get over it, when Sturrock goes, you will probably be moaning about his replacement soon enough.

Also see this article in the FT re. the best British managers of all time utilising said statistical method developed by Stefan Szymanski - which has a healthy section dedicated to Luggy - it also, interestingly has Stevie Tilson listed as the 10th best manager of all time! Eye-opening read.
