Billy Paynter

I think this was one of Tilson's failings. He and Brush did not seem to be able to improve players, either those graduating from the academy, or those he brought in to the club. I wonder if the likes of Prosser or Leonard would have progressed under Tilson in the same way they have under Sturrock and Brown.

The likes of Maher, Eastwood, Benno, Guttridge, arguably Gower, Barrett, Flahavan, Che Wilson, Pettefer, Wayne Gray etc all played their best football under Tilson.

The big difference between Tilly and Webb's teams was that Webb did the same with a young exciting team at the start of their careers, whereas Tilly's double promotion team was generally at the peak of their careers.

Only really Paynter at a lower level of those I mentioned. We had Charlie MacDonald in League One and he has done well in that League ever since. Revell is still in League One too although he's never really been prolific as a Football League striker anyway and I felt did well enough for us.

Charlie MacD did ok for mid table teams, but never pushing for promotion - if he wasn't scoring he didn't contribute much. When he played for us we were pushing for promotion... although the year after he left we could have done with him back!

You never mentioned him, but the other I thought of was Harrold, who is decent at L2, but the levels we were at when he played for us were beyond him.

Can't make my mind up about Billy. Is he past it (he didn't do much at Carlisle, did he?) or just needs a new challenge.

Good luck to him.

Did he ever really have it?

His best record was his one season at Swindon in 2009/10 when he got 29 in 52 alongside Charlie Austin, but other than that he's never managed above 15 and rarely got above 10 goals a season.

Scored 3 goals in the last 2 seasons and had the whole situation at Carlisle where he refused to do extra training, was fined and then took legal action.

Well, I was being kind really.

He (Billy) ranks alongside Barry Conlon in my list of top strikers .......... and that is a long way below James Walker for example .............. :'( :'(
