Billy Paynter

AussieShrimper

Schoolboy
Hey guys, back here in Australia, I have got some mates that are HUGE leeds united supporters, and they are always talking about how good Billy Paynter is going to be for them!!
I remember Southend signed him in the 06-07 season, but what did he do for us?
Also what is your opinion on him??
thanks

Billy Paynter and Roots Hall. A marriage made in heaven. As long as one of those is where one person boos them constantly for minor things and the other pukes his face off.

He is a quality player no doubt - it was just a) our style of play never suited target men as we didnt have a clue how to serve them and b) as soon as he didnt score 10 goals in August the fans were on his back and pretty much destroyed any confidence he had.

I was gutted it didnt work out for him as I'm a big fan.

Also suffered from the fact that he wasn't Freddy Eastwood mark II. The minute it became open knowledge about the background links in addition to this, fans soon lost patience.

Paynter was exactly the kind of striker we needed in the Championship-- strong, good in the air, good control-- but Tilson preferred Harrold and Bradbury and he barely got a look in. Don't think Tilson made heaps of mistakes as manager but this was one of them.

I felt like Paynter got enough chances. He just didn't look up to much. That's not really a slight on him though coz we had a few strikers around that time that didn't work out (Charlie MacDonald, Gary Hooper, etc) who have gone on to be prolific elsewhere.

I saw an interview with Alex Revell who said he's learned something from all of his managers about how to improve his game with the exception of Steve Tilson. If Tilly didn't really bring the best out of strikers then it's not surprising some of these guys didn't succeed.

Lots of those strikers went on to score many goals at a lower level than when we had them - Hooper being the obvious exception.

Only really Paynter at a lower level of those I mentioned. We had Charlie MacDonald in League One and he has done well in that League ever since. Revell is still in League One too although he's never really been prolific as a Football League striker anyway and I felt did well enough for us.

I think this was one of Tilson's failings. He and Brush did not seem to be able to improve players, either those graduating from the academy, or those he brought in to the club. I wonder if the likes of Prosser or Leonard would have progressed under Tilson in the same way they have under Sturrock and Brown.
