Billy Best & Gary Moore - The Legends Return

my dad told me a really interesting story that when he was teenager him and his friends would go to every away game, make there own way up meet billy best outside the entrance and he would give them 2 free tickets and after the game if there was enough room they used to go on the players coach and get a lift home.

today my old man was shocked when billy best come over to him as he remembered him from all those years ago and took the time to have a chat. he was made up as billy was his idol back then.

Nice story

Good introduction by the Man on the Mike " Please give a big hand to Billy Best and Gary Nelson". I am sorry but that is completely un-acceptable.
Totally agree, the man was a joke FFS,no way to treat a legend, please just get rid.

Agree about Peter Holmes, too many mistakes. His inane chatter is really annoying. Also called Droylsden "Droysdale". His whole manner suggests he knows very little about football, even less so about Southend.

Top stuff. Both played in the first game I saw in '71, two true legends from our past and with great footie names

I always liked Garry Nelson too, but as for the **** on the mic he is starting to get on me tits. Time he went in my view.

Can't believe that was the first time Gary Moore has been back at Roots Hall since 1972. We have had countless 'legends' come back over the past few years and I would have thought he would have been back before.

It was mentioned "You don't get FA cup scores like that any more".

(Shrewsbury 13 Marine 2). It was a few years back I know.

This is all true, we would take a coach to virtually every away game, and we would hang about outside the players entrance and usually Bill Best or someone would come over and hand over a handful of tickets (sometimes for all on the coach) to Nobbler as he was then known, (Dave Brabbing) and it was fitting that Dave was on the pitch today to make the presentations. Dave has kept in touch with Bill Best over the years and is a personal friend of him now.

Dave wanted me to write a biography of Bill Best the other day but thats not my style. He also told me today he was going to remind Gary Moore about the song made up for him against Swindon in the cup, anyone remember it?

DoDtS

P.S. I got lift on the coach back from Rochdale with Mick, Dave Brabbing, and a couple of others.

Ah remember the boys well. It was always nice going to the away games as the players, Best, Moore and all the players always gave us complimeatary tickets to get in to the grounds. And yes, if only a couple of you made a jouney mid week the players would give you alift back on the coach.

In the year we won 9-0.10-1 etc. did we score the most goals in the FA cup without winning it?

Peter Holmes's gaffes against Luton were completely unexcusable. If he was the kind of supporter of Southend that he mouths off to be then that kind of error should not have happened. To not know Gary Moore from Garry Nelson is disgraceful especially as there was nearly 10 years between their respective playing days. Come on Ron, can this buffoon!

Bit odd that I must say..but on the bright side, I have a shirt and a copy of A Century United signed by both Billy Best and Gary Moore to add to the Zone Xmas Raffle.

*Shamless Plug*..:)

I'm too young to remember Billy Best and Gary Moore personally but feel I know all about their exploits by hearing the stories over the years (mainly told over pints by fellow fans or on long trips to away matches).

That's why the 'gaffe' by Peter Holmes just shows him up as (IMO) a bit of a Johnny-come-lately who's not a real fan.

I remember walking out of the ground behind him towards the end of last season. The scores were being read out and Col Utd had lost as they slipped towards relegation. I over heard him say to his companion something along the lines of how most fans seemed to want Colchester to lose but that he preferred to see all Essex teams do well.

Don't get me wrong, everyone is entitled to their opinions and not everyone is rabid in their hatred of rival clubs. However is that really the type of 'supporter' who should be entrusted with representing our club over the tannoy? At the very least the club should be honest that he's somebody with broadcasting experience that we've got cheap and not try to talk up his fan credentials.

My recollections of him are that he was good in the air, as most centre forwards were in those days, and pretty naf with his footwork. Remember him blasting one over the bar against Newport in 1970 or 1971 from 6 yards. Mind you i've seen a few more do that since.
