Best Supported Essex Club

Maldon Shrimper

First XI⭐
Yes we all know that we all support the best side in the county and today undoubtedly confirmed this.

Colchester are on a decent run of form being unbeaten in a number of games.Played another Kent club in Gillingham and attracted a crowd of just over 5000.

Whereas we aren't on a decent run of form played another Kent side in Ebbsfleet and attracted a crowd of over 8000 mainly home fans.

The only difference is at we are non league and Colchester are playing in a higher league.

The sooner we are out of this league the better

League 2 Colchester had 5900 odd and 800+ gillingham

League 1 Orient played Crawley with a crowd of 8100 odd and 400 Crawley.

National league we played ebbsfleet
Crowd 8400 odd with 150 ebbsfleet.

Let's be honest. We are the bigger club of the three clubs but we desperately need to get out of this league.

Don’t wish to put a downer on the attendance figure but I remain convinced that the figure given is calculated as tickets bought for the game plus ALL season ticket holders. Yesterday in my area of the West there were a number of empty seats normally occupied by ST holders.
Obviously though this no doubt applies to other clubs as well so maybe your argument still holds to some degree.

Some of those will have moved to the north for a game.

It's not a downer... if no-one turned up for a game (for whatever reason) the attendance would still be the number of season rickets sold. I thought that was common knowledge.

Ok, so you are saying you accept that there were not 8,408 people attending the game yesterday. Maybe common knowledge to you, but I am pretty sure most people would think that was the number of spectators at the game.
You take attendance to mean “money taken”. Most people don’t.

There is no doubt given our league status we are a very well supported club both at home and away and I guess other clubs can only look on and wonder as to why but, Boxing Day attendance always has been a high attendance and not just for us but other clubs too.
I also noticed a few empty seats in the West around where I sit - which I normally ST holders

I would go as far as to say that Southend is the biggest club in non-league football in the U.K. and many parts of Europe

Oldham not far behind

I agree Scott - we are the one of the most attended in non-league and it’s great to see as I am sure you can remember travelling around the country previously when sometimes we only had about 75-100 supporters attending.
I think some clubs are envious of our following but, I do wonder that if we don’t get out of NL soon some of those attending will fall by the wayside

I remember a re-arranged game at Swansea’s old ground Vetch Field in the league where we took about 30 to 40 fans! Was a great game as well where we won with 9 men on the pitch!

As to your more general point you are right the new ownership bounce in crowd numbers will only last so long.

Down to family dinners together I reckon, a return to 11am and 1pm ko’s is a must andyesterday may have hit 9.5 thousand fans imo.

I've just seen this on Facebook from the 'Proper Football' site:
Boxing Day 2024 Top Non-League Crowds
8408 Southend United V Ebbsfleet
5834 Bury FC V Ramsbottom
5412 Aldershot Town V Woking
4925 Hereford FC V Kidderminster
4355 Yeovil Town V Eastleigh
4181 Macclesfield FC V Leek Town
All the rest listed were below 4,000.

Only three matches in FL Div. 2 bettered us:
Bradford City V Port Vale18,330 (are their ST's still ridiculously cheap?)
Carlisle United V Morecombe 9,225
MK Dons V Notts County 9,249

...Colchester United V Gillingham an embarrassing 5,934

It's a 12,000 seater, so the fact we are over 3k off explains the empty seats

Average home attendance for SUFC this year is 7180 and we are top of the National League.
This would place us 17th in League 1 and 8th in League 2 for home attendances. We also have the highest gate this season in the National League at 8495.

All except Yeovil and ourselves clubs who went under and were reformed. And Grids knows we were close enough to having to join them.
