Best eleven of the decade (on current form!!)

Shrimper Neil

Youth Team
Sorry if this has been done already but I havent seen it anywhere...

I don't often post on here but I'm seriously bored at work so thought I would put this out there... If you could bring back any player that played for us (loan or perm) from the decade and put them straight into the starting 11, what would your team be? I would go for something like this:

GK: FEDERICI
LB: HARDING
RB: FRANCIS
CB: CLARKE
CB: DERVITTE
LM: GOWER
CM: BAILEY
CM: MOUSSA
RM: KIGHTLY
CF: EASTWOOD
CF: BARNARD

SUBS:

HOOPER
ROBSON-KANU
MCCORMACK
MULGREW
SAWYER
BARRETT
MILDENHALL

Not bad eh? I would fancy a playoff push with this little lot. Notice that all of these played under Tilson. I can't remember anyone decent enough from the guff of 2000-2003 that would get into this side.

Thoughts?

Hard to argue against most of that except Moussa, who has yet to have a decent consistent spell for us yet. With Bailey in the middle yon can only put Macca in place of Moussa, as those two played so well together.

I noticed there's no Maher, good decision in my view. Also Francis' inclusion shows how poor we've been at right back! I would have found a place at least on the bench for Hammell!

Sorry but to have Moussa ahead of Maher is not right! Moussa has done very little in his southend career, Maher was and is a legend.

Subs
Darryl

I know that we're not great at the back right now but I don't think that a 38 year old Spencer Prior would be the answer to our woes.

I take your point re Maher and he would be in any 'all time' great team for me...but purely on current form, I would have Moussa in their over Maher.

Felixstowe & Walton United's finest may disagree.

Still, the point is that Moussa can't get a game in the middle in the current Southend side, let alone one in which we can pick any players who has played for us for the past ten years. Alan McCormack or Anthony Grant would probably have to get the nod.

Doesn't 'on current form' rule out anyone no longer playing? I would certainly consider Prior, Goater and Neil Campbell in a squad of 18.

So unbalanced in midfield. We would have the same problem as we have now, too many central midfielders competing for two places. Bailey & Macca were superb togther & were by far the best central midfield pairing we've had in a very long time. They were the reason Tilly realised Maher was not upto it any more!

GK Federici - Amazing kicker and shot stopper
RB Harding - Out of position but a better defender then Francis
CB Barratt - Because he is Mr Southend, pips Clarkey
CB Devitte - Made League One look easy
LB Mulgrew - Dead ball delivery was A1
LM Gower - Good goal scoring record
CM Bailey - Best centre midfield player I have seen at Roots Hall in 30 years
CM Mahar - To sit in front of back four and keep the ball moving
RM Stanislas - Liked this kid, now regularly involved with West Ham first team
CF Eastwood - Could shoot with both feet
CF Barnard - Good finisher and never stops trying

I'm not doing this on current form, as the notion of that is ridiculous. I'll pick my squad on the quality while they were with us over the past decade.

GK: Darryl Flahavan - With commanding defenders, he'd be alright. One of our most consistent performers of the last decade.

DR: Simon Francis - We haven't had many good Right Backs, but Francis on his game is hard to beat.
DC: Dorian Dervite - One of the best defenders we've had at Southend.
DC: Spencer Prior - At his best, he was amazing.
DL: Dan Harding - Solid defensively, and with the ball at his feet.

ML: Mark Gower - One of the most creative players I dare say we've ever had.
MC: Luke Guttridge - Like Bailey, but could pass a football.
MC: Kevin Maher - Say what you want about Maher, but him and Guttridge helped us win our first League title in decades.
MR: Jamal Campbell-Ryce - Kights hardly played for us, JCR gave us natural width, pace and he scared the daylights out of defenders.

FC: Freddy Eastwood - Picks himself
FC: Lee Barnard - Picks himself

GK Federici
RB Jupp
CB Barratt
CB Cort
LB Mulgrew
LM Gower
CM Bailey
CM Maher
RM Kightly
ST Eastwood
ST Gray
