'Bentley out to prove he's still best in the league'

Evening Echo

The News
SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown insists Daniel Bentley will be eager to show he is still the best goalkeeper in League One when he lines up against Rochdale at Roots Hall this weekend.

He hasn't got too prove anything, he has been fantastic for us. One tiny, flukey error. Thats all. Keep your chin up Dan, your doing great:thumbsup:

Nah, he's rubbish. Totally naused up against Gillingham, sell him to Leeds.

Sorry I must have missed something, did he concede 6 which were all howlers?

Sensationalist rubbish from the Echo, just like labelling their goal on Saturday as a "calamitous error", seems nobody has watched the highlights.

Agreed.

Aaarrrgggh... Yet another Bentley thread!!

Dont get me wrong, im a huge fan of Dan, I think he is one of the best prospects this club has delivered in many years, and would like him to stay at the club as long possible. That being said, Im guessing that his value has dropped some what since pre-season when QPR put in £1.25 Million.

However, looking at current stats, we are just over 1/3rd of the season gone, and he has kept 3 clean sheets in 15 league games, and we have the joint worst 3rd clean sheet record in league 1. (Ironically Rochade have the joint 2nd best) Which probably means we are looking at a 0-0 draw on Saturday, Unless we get the first goal, then I think we are looking at a 1-0 home win.

Agreed.

We're probably looking at that anyway, Rochdale have had three successive 0-0's in L1....

For what reason ?

Two goals in two games would be a start.

He is a great keeper but its always amusing how people will ignore flaws and mistakes in some, and crucify others.

Bentley lets in a howler and barely mentioned, Smith saves a penalty and got criticised for using the wrong hand.

If he gets back to his normal self that wont affect his value, but that was a terrible howler and scouts would have seen it, he doesnt want to be making any more like that.

His value will have gone down though purely because of his contract.

That isn't true, Smith made errors of judgement i.e. not coming for crosses game after game. Bentley's **** ups can be counted on one hand. I wouldn't call it a howler either, David Seaman's 'howler' against Ronaldinho's freekick anyone? Happens to the best keepers. Bentley has bailed us out time and time again with magnificent saves (including the penalty save at Wembley that got us promoted), therefore I think it's perfectly reasonable that people will defend him.

Indeed they would. They always sit in the same area as me and they would have seen the complete change in flight and not decided that he has some sort of 'flaw' in his game.

What do you mean by two goals in two games?

Smith is high up there in the list of unfairly criticized players.

Oh come on, that goal should never have gone in whatever flight the ball took. A scout would look at that goal and put it down to keeper error, which is what it was. Doesnt mean its a flaw in his game, but they would have raised eyebrows.

The game before he gave a penalty away rushing out.

Im not slating him, I think he is a great keeper and delighted to have him and he will win us far more points than he will cost us, but I wont completely ignore his mistakes because of that.

Very valid points! Dan isn't the finished prospect, and scouts will have seen these errors. However, given his age and the maturity he shows, he is one of the most exciting young 'keepers in the country.

Dan has been amazing for us over the last 2 seasons. He's having his first sticky period for us. By his own high standards I think 3 of the last 5 goals we've conceded he'd be disappointed with. The penalty he conceded against Shrewsbury, the first goal vs Chesterfield where I thought he was hesitant in coming off his line and then of course the freak goal at Gillingham. He's definitely got the strength of character to put those mistakes to the back of his mind though. That's what all top keepers are able to do. I have no worries at all. He's top class.

Remember Jack Buckland playing on loan for Cheltenham against us - I think we scored 4 (??) and he was terrible. Now look at him England and Stoke - I think that Bentley will easily be as good as him.

Can't really believe that there should be any negativity shown to Bentley.

For what reason ?

Exactly what Jam Man and others said.

He is a tad off form lately, it's completely understandable that he wont make the same amount of clean sheets as he did last season (20 I think?) and to be fair, he has stepped up a league & still puts in quality performances game after game.

However conceding 16 goals in 15 games so far, in my opinion he would'nt merit the same amount of attention from scouts etc as he did at the end of last seasons fantastic run to get us promotion. Hence I think his value may have dropped a little, and adding to that, what with his contract finishing soon, I would imagine if a move was on the cards, I think it would be a higher weekly wage as apose to a transfer fee.

As per my previous post, Im a big fan of Dan, he has been awesome for us and I believe he will continue to be so. He has saved us countless points already this season & is a true asset to the club.
