Great, I hope to finally meet up with you in Cardiff.
Gow was good - his touch and control are excellent... but he was really s-l-o-w. He made Che look like Linford Christie!

McLaren, on the other hand, was whippet fast and looked an exciting wee player. Would be an excellent acquisition, IMHO. As for the Jags... what's gone wrong there?! Are they Div 2 bound next season? If so... "Jings!", as they say round your parts.

Look forward to seeing you in Cardiff!

Was very bizarre too. Having the whole of Old Trafford singing the National Anthem for an England game.

Strange how a country across the sea can be more patriotic to the UK than, seemingly, two countries adjacent to England

I used to think that we could look at some of the better Scottish Div1 & lesser SPL teams & pick up some good talent for Southend's level but Boston went down that route & look how their season has panned out. Having said that though I'm sure there would be a few worth a punt on that could come down and do an Andy Thomson for us.

Thistle, well where do you start? No money, strict wage structure that they won't break, no parachute payment for dropping out of the SPL, they started the season with a management team living in the shadow of a past manager who wouldn't surrender the reigns. I'll be sad to see them go down if they do, but at least Hamilton Accies will stay up (prob due to their plastic pitch). They're a team I always have had a soft spot for, possibly due to seeing them on Saint & Greavsie each Saturday lunchtime just after the Southend Friday night goals had been on!

Erm, not strange in the slightest... you see, most followers of the Northern Irish side are Unionists, and are thus plus Catholique que le Pape, as it were...

Well, after several reads, I finally realised that teh Catholic part has absolutely no relevance short of a turn of phrase. Very confusing.

Think I see what you mean though. On this basis, would it be fair to say that most Welsh and Scottish are Republicans?

More like Nationalists.

Hence, the SNP having such a large contingent in the Scottish Parliament.

Also, think of the past occurences of English owned holiday homes being torched by Welsh nationalists in North Wales. Now, Wrexham may be inviting a number of other English league clubs to join in the party by using the Fans United thing (which is entirely another issue & not one to be covered here), but lest we forget the Welsh REALLY hate the English & as has been mentioned on various threads before, Cardiff has the potential to become a powderkeg. Lets hope not though, eh!

Don't want it to happen but it would seem like madness on the part of our Welsh friends.

Seems like arranging a battle then trying to get yourself outnumbered in it!

Anyhow, apologies for assisting this digression. I love the way a topic entitled "BBC Essex - Brian Wheeler" has moved on..

Also confirmed that Southend were informed rather than consulted about the decision not to play it when the teams line up.

Personally the "National Anthem" does nothing for me but I'm always one for a protest.

Anyone got the words ? I know the first line - God save our gracious Kev - but the rest is a struggle.
that is f**kING AWFUL AND OUTRAGOUS.. how can someone who is english not even know the words to the national anthem..

Reminiscent of how the Midweeks threads started by Dave used to twist & turn (usually due to Ron Manager & yours truly). Sorry people!

You've only got to listen to the uplifting National Anthems of virtually every other country in the world to realise why. It is dull, the words mean absolutely nothing if you're not a monarchist and above all it is NOT and never has been an ENGLISH anthem.

If we had our own ENGLISH anthem then all of this crap at football matches would be avoided. We could sing the English Anthem, Wrexham could sing the Welsh one then all those that wanted to join in could sing God Save the Queen and all those that don't could just stay silently standing.

No no. I think if you caught any of the 2 and a half minutes of the Azerbaijan funeral March or the Liechtenstein rip-off of ours, you'd realise ours isn't the dullest!!

It's a particular turn of phrase which is used to denote when someone goes out of their way - above and beyond what might be considered the norm - to prove their allegiance to something.

It was certainly a phrase I saw used to describe, for example, the Madras-born Nasser Hussain... whose fist pumping, fish'n'chip eating, pit-bull owning, geezer-speaking captaincy of the England cricket team meant that he was almost more English than an Englishman.

The French phrase for "more English than the English" is "plus Catholique que le Pape" ("more Catholic than the Pope"), which seemed to a be particularly appropriate phrase to use when discussing the Unionist community in Northern Ireland, n'est-ce pas?!

Now "abide with me", that's tune
Er, theirs is a dirge too....

At least most of us know the words to our dirge. Many Wrexham fans don't know the words to Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau and even some of those that do haven't got a clue what they actually MEAN. Some Wrexham fans have even requested a phonetic version (i.e. English phonetics!) so they can try to learn to pronounce it for their planned unofficial rendering!

I think we should give it a go and I wish Wrexham luck with their attempt at theirs (I might even join in!). After all, both anthems should have been played and with the "Fans United" atmosphere I honestly believe that only a tiny minority would have booed the other team's anthem. Not playing the anthems is just giving in to the idiotic fringe.

We should all sing "THERE'S ONLY ONE STEVIE TILSON" instead, f**k all this national anthem toss lets turn into a proper Southend moment to remember!

When we were on holiday in North wales last summer most of the locals spoke Welsh. However there were some words with no Welsh equivalent so the average conversation of the Welsh youth went something along the lines of, "Yakky da yacky da f**king yacky da f**k f**k, f**king yakky da"

By the way, I'm an atheist thank God

The vast majority of the Welsh are NOT Nationalists. They're proud to be Welsh and British. This is why Plaid Cymru is floundering around looking for ideas to save themselves from oblivion now they've got the Welsh Assembly. The next step is full independence, which would be overwhelmingly rejected at a referendum and most people see no need for a nationalist party any more.

Secondly, the Welsh DON'T hate the English. The Scots seem to genuinely hate us but the Welsh just do it as a wind-up, knowing that the English will fall for it every time. The Welsh don't really hate anyone - they're just not that kind of people - but the thing they do dislike is English incomers not bothering to try to fit in with the local community or even learning to say "Good Morning" in Welsh. In that respect I agree with the Welsh entirely.

As for Cardiff becoming a powderkeg - not a chance! It'll be another great day out, hopefully with a different result from last year.

Perhaps because it's not an English national anthem? It's a British one and therefore encompasses the people of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Ironic, really ...
