2)But for those of you who have never visited the graves in Normany, you should try and get there. Its a humbling experience.

Went when I was at school about 5-6 years ago to the Somme, went all around the battlefields, graves and momuments, very moving experience

3) Probably be in for some stick but I was in PC World Southend at 11 on Sunday. They asked for a minutes silence over the tannoy. The majority of staff seem to be asians and unfortunately whilst I and many others stood still for a minute, they carried on talking in the normal manner.

Maybe just ignorance on their part.

Its still encouraging that it is a hugely well supported thing at football grounds. Just about perfect silence on Saturday at the game and its when theres lots of kids there that it can be explained to them exactly why this small token of respect and thanks is afforded to all those who have lost their lives.

It was well supported on saturday and I was sitting in an unfamilar seat up in the South Upper (normally in East Reds), except a bunch of 4 teenage girls laughing during it

Just out of interest, how comes this didn't turn into a 2 minute appulase rather than a silence?

I was actually commending you, but if you want to take the wrong end of the stick, that's your look-out

it was the tone in which it came across... as i always say, hard to interperet tone on message boards etc

I attended Menin Gate at Ypres yesterday which was a very moving and emotional experience. Seeing so many people paying respects to all nations from all nations was really something. The sheer scale of seeing over 53000 names listed of people never found was truely humbling.

My Dad and I went there last year my great great grandad died in the war, and we managed to find his name, a very proud moment for me, and totally took me back. A day im glad I managed to spend with my dad, i'll always remember, and I feel emensly proud of having so many of my family fight for the country I call my home.

Personally, I would think that would be inappropriate. For the Alan Ball tribute at Southampton last season (and others since and prob before) the minutes applause is to mark a celebration of the persons life and to show thanks for their achievements during their life. I dont believe that a minute or two of applause for these poor souls would be appropriate. I think the two minutes silence is very humbling and respectful given the sacrifice these people have made. It would be wrong to change that IMO.

aaaaah I new it would n't be long before you came on to try and rubbish there achievments, with a muggy remark.....

get over the fact you can't handle living in Britain, and let some people be proud of what they believe in

Get your facts straight...who am I rubbishing? As I've previously said, I've got nothing but respect for those who fought in WWI & 2 and all the rest of the conflicts....my own family was badly affected. I donated my money and paid my respects on Sunday.

One big knee jerk reaction Cockles without reading the rest of the posts.

I don't know why I feel the need to justify myself to you but: http://www.shrimperzone.com/vb/showpost.php?p=523567&postcount=15
