Battle Of The SUFC Legends - Quarter Finals - Kevin Maher vs Spencer Prior

Who is more of an SUFC legend?

Sorry, but just need to check this out...I'm sure Spinner scored the goal against Chester at the end of the '88-'89 season which many of us had thought kept us up. If this was the case, then this was his debut season. Sorry to be a pedant, but it's a bit disconcerting when memory about crucial matters may not be working properly anymore!

Indeed, Rob.

If You Check Robin's Superb Database

You will find you are right.

And the Database confirms Spinner joined us in July '87 as a Trainee.

Thanks, Tom - it's a relief to know the long-term memory's intact at least! Talking of which, I don't think Spinner actually played much of the '89-'90 promotion season. He broke his leg (against Peterboro', early Oct. IIRC) and I don't think he featured again that season. I'm pretty sure we had Guy Butters (on loan) and Brushy/Clarkey mainly at the back that season...

i know, and just when I'd made a rooney-in-spinner's-pocket sig ready for the semifinals, that'll show me not to get ahead of myself.

some random posters really did crawl out of the woodwork to vote for Cap'n Kev!

To be fair you could say that for both., I believe at least one poster for Spinner hasn't actually registered a single post.

As for the vote? I admit, I voted for Kev. That's not in any way to denegrate Spinner, just that in this particular vote I decided to go with Maher.

Truth be told, I've always rated Maher, and for several years he was, in my opinion, one of the few quality players we had. That's without even going down the long service route (which could be used to argue against his ability of course)
Kevin was always one to split opinions. Maybe some "got" what he did and others didn't, maybe some attributed skills to him that others realised he didn't have. Who knows? Certainly from the closeness of the vote it's a tough call.

Yes, I voted Kevin, however Spinner still is, and always will be, a SUFC legend in my book!

He has a lot of support, he was a very good loyal servant of us. I heard on many occasions in the stand of fans moaning that Kev played the ball sideways and not forwards a lot. Thers are the fans that have no idea how to play football. It's not all about pumping the ball forward all the time, it's about moving the ball about, pulling the other team out of position and making the opening at the right time. Kev did this on numerous occasions and did it very well.

I voted for Spinner because I thought he was more influential to us as a player than Maher ever was. His return, followed by the signing of a goal scorer in Freddy Eastwood was the catalyst that took us to successive promotions. That isn't to denigrate the contribution of Maher in particular, who had demonstrated loyalty to the club, during its and his lean years, and his standard of play for those 3 years was outstanding.

Maher contributed a hell of a lot to this club, I just think Prior contributed more.

Maher was recognised by many as the most talented in a dross team. However, he stayed here because no-one else wanted him.
