For those of us that were around when the Exorcist was first screened it was a true horror film of its time. It scared the life out of me when it was orginally shown and to date I have never been able to re-watch it.

For interest, I checked the IMDB top rated horror films:

Rank Title
12 Spoorloos (1988) 8.1/10 (7400 votes)

So of our 32 picks, only 7 are on there!

And mine got trounced in the first round!

:'(

I still haven't voted, and I'm still struggling. They're both darn scary films.

I'm probably going to go for the Shining, simply because I did almost poo my pants the first time I saw Jack Nickolson smashing down that door...

Had to go for the Exorcist here.

Not really huge on horror films to be honest but this scared the living f cuk out of me. The first time i watched it was when i was about 15/16 and i watched it in the middle of the night, scared the hell out of me! Haven't plucked up the courage to watch it since.

Agree with others though, the older horror films are much better, modern 'horror' films just seem to be more gore than actual horror (i.e Saw, Hostel etc).

That is one f***ing amazing film, an absolutely astonishing performance. How that geezer didn't win the Oscar that year, I'll never know (other than the fact that he was speaking in German).

Matt

It got nominated for best Foreign film. If it had been a Hollywood Blockbuster then of course if would have won every award under the sun.

If you haven't seen it I urge everyone to view this movie and also La Vita Bella. (Life is Beautiful) Now I don't often cry but I defy anyone not to get emmotional in that amazing film.

A Must see!

Think that'd be a huge battle over the classic b&w ones against the modern mega pics! Dambusters every time!

The very best War Film would be Western Approaches and for several very good reasons.

1. All the actors were actually serving members of the Merchant Service, Royal Navy or HM Coastguard.

2. The director was totally unknown but became rather famous in the form of Pat Jackson who also discovered one Sidney Pottier.

3. Filming took place in wartime in hostile waters.

4. My dad was one of the main characters in the lifeboat after the sinking of his ship.

And yes, I can prove it and still have some of the original stuff of the film.

Good Stuff!

I found thishttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHKjoYKmQ7o

Good God, who the hell found that snippet. You catch a very very brief glimse of the old man in that clip as the camera pans across the whole crew. All of what I said last night (while drunk) was quite true but I forgot to mention that the dialog was bloody awful. The acting wasn't up to much either but the actual storyline was very good indeed and propelled Pat Jackson to fame and fortune in Hollywood no less. My dad told me some great stories about the making of the film and I sometimes pop it on and watch the budding family superstar in action.

Thanks for the flashback.

the shining for me, I actually thought the exorcist was a bit cheesey, where as I thought the shining was a fantastic story, brilliantly acted (jack nicholson firmly planted as my fave actor after this)

Yay says Regan!

No complaints here. For me it's two 'Battle of' appearances, one win (Oceanic Fitties) and one runner up.

I'd still argue that The Shining is the far better film, however I guess the vote came down to scariness and I can't argue that The Exorcist provides that shock factor.

Well done Naps. You there tonight?

The winner is The Exorcist.

"Your mother sucks co cks in hell" says Mr B ...possibly

I'm glad The Exorcist won, and that i didn't have to choose between that and The Omen, which remains my favourite

I'm surprised the voting was so low tbh ... maybe horror just isn't that popular a genre, or perhaps people are a little "Battle weary" ??

I'm waiting in the wings with my "Battle of the Sketch Shows" ... but we have Js "Battle of the Cartoons" next in line so you'll just have to wait a while for it
