Barrett to retire at the end of the season

Just don't understand why we've signed him. Already had 4 centre halves, plus White that could do a job there and some kid that got a few games on the bench earlier this year, but now doesn't feature. If a league 2 team can't offer a kid a place on the bench, what chance to kids stand?

And on a more serious note here is where I have ALWAYS stood on AB.

I think we can all agree he is exceptionally passionate about his football. But with all the passion came a one footed defender who was often either playing the opps onside or wrong side of his man and spent most of his time cuddling forwards to death. It was these deficiencies that led to last ditch 'heroic' defending. Never a leader and often carried by his defensive pairing. He did offer an attacking option seemingly not offered by our current defence.

True I was never his greatest fan but someone earlier posted the term icon and I'd be happy to go along with that.

Never a leader?! Hmmn, agree to disagree on that one, one of the strongest leaders we have had in a decade.

He was a league one /two level player who played for a league one / league two side and there's the killer, if he was amazingly good and better than that then he would have left us and then never been around long enough to play enough games to become considered a legend.

He had his faults but Id ditch anyone of our defenders for him in his prime in the blink of an eye, add in his character and being a local lad and I cant see why anyone wouldn't see what he did for the club.

I have always loved AB and always will. Seems a strange signing by Brown in hindsight though as he seemingly doesn't now want to play him.

I firmly believe he was and that he was brought in to galvanise the players onwards and upwards - there have been few better captains and motivational leaders than Barrett.

Do people REALLY believe he was signed by Ron Martin? After the bitter falling-out they had which led to Barrett leaving the club against his will? Ridiculous. Bringing back Eastwood and Barnard - yes, RM's work, those 2 players left on good terms with the Chairman. Barrett? Absolutely not.

The fact that Barrett was prepared to come back and work for the man who let him down so badly last time, says much about his commitment to the cause.

Whatever happens with Brown Barrett should be our next manager. He might be untried as a manager but the last time we had an untried manager it didn't work out to badly

Tilson had much more of a background in coaching/management when he took over than Barrett has now, though. Barrett probably has a decision to make in that he can either carry on with his own project or look to progress further down the FA's pathway by continuing his training with a professional club.

At the moment, Kev Maher's a far more likely candidate for managing us than Barrett is I would assume.
