Barrett for captain

So what if at the start of next year Barrett has a drop in form are you going to give the armband back to Maher for a little while until Barrett gets back to form then has it back.
When Man Utd won the double in 94 their captain (Bruce) was the only player in the starting 11 who wasn't a full international, you can't just give the armband to the best player.
Maher has been our captain for three years and to take the armband away from him would damage his and possibly the whole team's morale.

I find these repeated arguments about the captaincy futile, unsettling and unnecessary. Just because one person wears the armband doesn't mean the rest of the team should be meek lambs and in SUFC that is certainly not the case. I wonder whether too many people are associating captaincy with the fine examples set by Roy Keane and Patrick Vierra (who, until recently, had a comparitevely poor season) and expecting Kev Maher to be identical in his approach ?

I repeat the facts.

Successive managers clearly rate Kev Maher.

We have looked poor when opposition have done their homework and shut Kev out of the game.

The players clearly rate Kev Maher.

Kev Maher's assist record this season is admirable.

I don't buy into the bullsh*t about having captaincy as a clause in the contract. If the rest of the team didn't feel that he was the best option this would be demonstrated in their body language and they wouldn't be shy in making their views known to management.

I do buy into the argument that if Maher wasn't around Barrett would be the next best option. Until that time there is no reason whatsoever either now or at any time in the past to call his captaincy into question. You're wasting your time and my time when there are much bigger issues to concern ourselves about.

Many good points there although i do actually see maher as quite similar to Keane in one respect about the arguing with refereeing decisions.
Obivously he isn't vocal like Keane but more leads by example like Beckham.
Also agree that Barrett would be second choice to be captain but only if Maher isn't around.
It isn't good for team cohesion to keep chopping and changing and as most people seem to think Barrett as form player should be captain then thats what would happen.
If next year Bents has an amazing season should he then be made captain.
The most important part of a captains job is maintaining stability and drive in the team, not being the best player.

But thats the whole point, Maher IMO does not inspire the team verbally. If he did then instead of being in the Play-Offs we could be sitting pretty waiting for League One to start in August.

Maher to blame for us not getting automatic promotion? That's harsh... seeing as we didn't expect to be anywhere near the top at the start of the season.

I know there's more to it than that, but i think its fairly major reason........

The reason we didn'y go up automatically was because when it came down to it we wern't good enough.
If we had played Orient yeovil and Grimsby in the middle of the season and got 1 point out of it then had the good run that we had in the middle at the end of the season instead then people would be praising Maher and the team for doing so well and nearly getting automatic promotion.

Only Eastwood in the team gets as much special treatment from the opposition. Orient was the perfect example of how to shut our play down. Both their central pair seemed on instruction to both close Maher down as quickly as possible forcing him to go back.

I find it no small coincidence that Gower saw a lot more of the ball that game as we adapted or that Bentley had possibly our best chance.

Exactly the same at Oxford. Kev always had men on his back.

It's not going to be easy stamping your authority on games when there's constantly two players coming towards you. If teams play like this, Bentley, Gower and Petts need to contribute more and I'm pleased to see both Bentley's and Gower's form improving in recent weeks. Looks promising.

Adam Barrett should be made captain next year. He has been absolutley amazing during the whole season, i say whole because i think Maher has been under the weather for the last 5 or 6 games(when we really needed him most). I read a post about Barrett "pumping up" the players in the tunnel yesterday before the game, too me that says enough. No disrespect to Maher but i really think we would benefit more from the armband being worn by Mr Barrett next year.
COULD NOT AGREE MORE!!

I was slated on here when i mentioned this the other day!!!

Barrett is a born leader where Maher isn't!

Barrett is just so superb and so vocal!

Maher is good at positional play etc, but how many free kicks and other set plays has he wasted this season??

His free kicks and corners hardly have any zip to them do they?

BARRETT FOR CAPTAIN!!! and if that means Maher will get upset, throw his toys out the pram and want to leave then so be it! If Kev is Pro and man enough i'm sure he will just get on and do his best for SUFC.

UP THE BLUES!

Now if you were a player and someone like Barrett gives you a bol****ing for not being on your game then you would listen because of his 'lead by example' style. If your captain (maher) is not at his best and gives the same bol****ing, the attitude may come back as "well your not on your game so why are you having a go at me".

Before everyone has a pop at me please re-read the top part of the post about the crucial run-in part. I appreciate Maher has done it for most of the season and I know he was voted 2nd by his fellow comrades in PPOTY ( i would like to know the numbers because i reckon 10 players came 2nd... Sir Adam must have dominated..........)
Again another great post i 100% agree with!!
